Using our NBA simulation engine, Whatifsports.com has simulated the 2010 NBA Finals 1001 times. The computer provided the Celtics' and Lakers' average points per game and each team's winning percentage.

The Laker and Celtic dynasties of the past are etched in NBA history books and recalled often by the men who played on those classic franchises. But it's the rivalry between the two, East Coast meets West Coast, that truly grabs hold of the fans and tosses them right in the middle of the debate as to who is better. Heading into these 2010 NBA Finals, the Boston Celtics have won 17 NBA titles in their history; the LA Lakers have won 15.

But after a seven game series, in which the home team won every game, Kobe will enjoy his 5th chocolate chip cookie and the Lakers will close within one title of the Celtics.

The Whatifsports.com NBA simulation engine predicts the Lakers will win the 2010 NBA Finals in seven games.

Link.

All I've got to say is that if we only lose this series 4-3 after using our regular season winning percentage and stats, then we're in *really* good shape, because we've taken it to another level in the playoffs.

in Game 6....it even has the sketchy ref factor!

But I don't see the Lakers averaging 100 ppg. They've only cracked 100 three out of twelve games against us in the Big 3 era.

Thanks for the link. Pretty cool.

Weirdly, this prediction of a loss IS good news.

I wonder what the same model predicted vs. ORL/CLE.

If I had to guess:  Cleveland in 3 and Orlando in 2.

  • Another undersized Celtic...
Sorry, I know it's all in fun, but this simulation is as pointless as playing the Celtics vs Lakers 1000 times on NBA 2k10 or EA LIVE.

As I was reading the opening paragraph of their article, THIS is exactly what I was thinking.  How could any reputable sports news or analysis company use the regular season numbers as a predictor?  If I were using regular season numbers, I would have thought the Lakers would win in 5.  This is good news!

I have written this before but here is a good way to look at statistics and statistical analysis. I once heard that the Soviet Union and the U.S. were in competition with each other at a track meet. They were the only two countries who participated. The U.S. absolutely dominated the Soviet Union but the Soviet paper the next day read "Soviet Union takes 2nd place at world track meet, U.S. takes 2nd to last". Well, technically, they were correct assuming you want to cal it a world track meet.

I also heard this one time in relation to statistics. If you have your head in an oven and your behind in a freezer, on average, you are doing pretty well. Well, we are going to have the Lackers head in an oven and their behinds in a freezer and all the stats in world won't show that they won when the series is over. C's in 6.
