Flying under the radar so far is Perk Defense on JO. I just looked at JO's numbers,  :o

FG (4/24) FG% (16.7%) TO (4) Assists(0)

Taken 3FT's so far. How does a starting Center Shoot that poorly (16.7%)?

Perk might be the MVP so far.

Perk was doing a heckuva job defending those O'Neal jumpers.  Hand up on almost every attmempt.

IMO, O'Neal was also trying to force a lot of shots which wasn't exactly helping his case, either.

Perk  & rondo's defense which don't show in stats at all are BIG.  The whole team defense has been great but rondo & perk made their counterparts look pretty bad

Watching Perk dominate JO and then beat him on the break offensively is a beautiful thing

Not to derail the thread, but vote yes or no:

Next year, would you sign JO if he agreed to a minimum-level deal?

I loved Perk's defense last night. He has always been a good man to man defender but his help defense is lacking most nights. Last night, the block shots scared Miami into shooting low % jumpers. If Perk could do that every night, the Celtics would win another championship. :)

Well, it doesn't hurt that JO is a terrible basketball player at this point in his career.  But Perk absolutely player a great defensive game last night.  I would have preferred that he brought it in game 1 as well, but better late than never.

Jermaine O'Neal is making terrible decisions offensively + is being asked for far too much by his coaches and teammates.

That combined with very good-to-excellent defense equals horrific results

Seems like they're trying to force the ball into JO early in the game, establish him to open stuff up outside, but they're failing abysmally.  JO looks like a stinking corpse right now.  I'm thinking Perk's in his head, he can't get good position, Perk's contesting everything.  I'm sure that against MOST other teams, he's look better, but right now....   he's worthless for Miami.  Can's score, but still shooting.  Works for me!

Perk's one of the best big-man defenders in the league when he's healthy/motivated; it's almost an unfair matchup.

I wouldn't want him playing substantial minutes.

As a starter or first big off the bench? No interest.
As a fourth big in the depth chart? Yeah, maybe.
As the fifth big in the depth chart? Definitely.

I don't think JO would have any interest in a role that small though. He still feels like he can contribute more to a team and on some teams he can.

What little basketball I did play it was mainly at the center position. I had very close to a 40 inch vertical jump and excellent timing. I use to block guys in pickup games by just touching the ball and letting them catch it and shoot it again. I did this only because it was much too easy to block their shot just once and being able to block it so they could catch it and then block them again was much more fun. .

The reason I say this is maybe it's just because I played center that I notice Perk's game. I have said many times that if I have to defend one player within 4 feet of the basket I would take Perk over anyone in the league and that includes Howard. Perk has excellent position on D and he's very hard to move. What amazes me is how often his opponent misses and yet noone notices because Perk didnt get 30 inches off the ground or do something stupid like block the guys shot 20 feet out of bounds. 16.7 % field goal percentage by his opponent says everything and dont discount it by saying Oneal is taking all of those missed shots hurriedly.
