I think it's clear... in '02, we were a 49 win squad and we nearly won the ECF against a team with a great transition game. Likewise, the following year, we beat a better (and more favored) Pacers squad, led by J. O'Neil, Tinsley, and Miller.
Realize, the only post up player we had, before the trades for Rogers-Delk, was Vitaly. Thus, in his finite wisdom, O'Brien launched a 3 pt perimeter strike force with a plan B of the Paul/'Toine show. This was a low rebounding, blitz zone defense squad, clearly subpar (in talent) but overachieving on all cylinders.
Today, we have the equivalent of a dozen Vitalys (BBD, 'Sheed, Williams, Perks, KG) to cover the 4/5 spots or perhaps a dozen or so Tony Batties. Thus, with Thibodeau, substituting for Dick Harter, Jim O'Brien can resurrect his career as the Celt's head coach.
Here's how... use the same offense except this time, pass into the post first, and then execute the 3 pointer bombers, once interior defenses are engaged. This works because now, the post is KG/Perks, and on the outside are Pierce, Finley, Ray Ray, Nate. That's a much better squad of gunners than McCarty, Rogers/Delk, Kenny, E Williams, & 'Toine.
