They were complaining about possibly missing games, not more practice.
No he was talking about practice

The question was

"Before the game Doc was saying that he thinks you guys need to practice more and that you haven't practiced enough this year and that you guys, you two in particular maybe maybe need to practice, if he needs to sit you out of games even just need to practice more and you will. How do feel about that?"

KG: "I'm not really feeling thatidea but hey, this is the Doc River's show and we're just hosts...ahh, I mean we're just guests on it. Ah ha!! So whatever he feels is best. Umm Paul and I, I think I speak for both of us, we don't really feel that but practice does make things better. You get to clean up a lot of different things. We're not ones to like to miss games but, he threw that idea at us. We'll see."

No offense, but did you even read what you posted? It's pretty obvious KG is referring to missing games. He says he doesn't like the idea of missing games in favor of trying to get into better shape and practicing.

Who in this world doesn't think real games > practice? That's all KG is saying.

Frankly, I'm surprised that the boos made them react because until now nothing made them react and bounce back.

It's good to see that they finally care, now let's hope they keep this mindset for every game.

No offense but did you watch the video....like seven times. like I did to right down what was said?

It was pretty obvious watching the video and listening to it that the crux of the conversation was about practice

Pierce even went on to expand saying he didn't agree would rather not practice and play in games

Reading the comments doesn't do justice to how the questions were answer or the tone in their voices

Maybe later they clarified their statements but during the presser, to me, it sure sounded like they were talking about not liking the idea of more practice

The problem is the potential to miss games, not to practice more. Do you think KG and Pierce would openly complain about practicing more? The problem for them is more practice at the expense of games.

You even mention it:

I think that speaks for itself. It's a practice vs. playing in games dilemma. Not a lack of practice vs. more practice dilemma.

Here, watch the video and decide for yourself everyone

Clearly I see how it was asked and answered differently than some and quite honestly the written word is pulling a lot of tone and inflection out of not only the question, but the answers

Agreed.  With any hope, they start to hit a groove and "get hot" at juuuuust the right time... entering the playoffs.
Celtics fan for life.

The clear impression I get is that KG was disagreeing with the idea of Doc not starting/playing him and Paul, saying they're "not really feeling that", meaning they don't think they should be on the bench to start games, (or miss games completely), but that they would have no problem with practicing more, if it was asked of them. I agree on many levels ... the emotional and psychological damage done to the team by not starting the two superstars would be monumental ... it's a way of the coach saying to the rest of the team that he doesn't have faith in the two most important players ... it would be an extremely stupid thing to do, and it would pretty much seal our fate. That said, I don't think it will ever happen ... I think it was just a little trash-talk from the coaching staff meant as a wake-up call.

Seen the video, and it only enhances the impression that the problem they would have would be about missing games. Seriously, if the question posted was merely about "what do you feel about having more practice" I very much doubt that KG and Pierce would come out and say that they disagree with it. It's the "at the expense of games" that they have a problem with and they make mention of it quite a few times in the video, that they don't want to miss games, that it would be counter-productive in their opinion.

Yup ... same impression I got, BC, (previous post).

  • You know my methods, Watson.
i think we tend to take for granted the idea that "well, they're professional basketball players - they just show up and play..."

that's the furthest thing from the truth.  i will never forget when larry bird's career was just about over due to all the back problems (and other assorted injuries).  larry said the biggest problem with his game (at that time) was a LACK OF PRACTICE TIME...

when i played high school basketball and the playoffs / tournament rolled around i will never forget that our coach took us all back to square one: we did the fundamental defensive sliding drills, passing drills, etc.  why?  because it's easy to take them for granted as a player, and it's easy for a coach to take for granted that his players just know this.

it's obvious this celtics team needs practice...  and the time to peak is not in december, but heading into the playoffs.  this team is unique from all the others over the last 3 years...  i like the fact that they're taking a different approach this year.  if pierce, kg or whomever can't gravitate to that, then i HOPE they lose early.  they don't deserve a title if they're not willing to sacrifice...

Whether it is the right idea or not, I hope the players buy into Doc's plan because the opposite is the worst thing that can happen to this team right now.
