I see this as this season.  Next season, it will be Pierce.  The following season, it will be KG.

Now, if Ray can be moved for a younger star (like Martin) then it works.

But if Ray get traded for a poo-poo platter of nice players that are overpayed for multiple seasons (like Hinrich and Salmons), it is bad.

It also compounds in the NBA.

Let me give you the example.  The NY Knicks.

The Knicks did the same thing with Patrick Ewing.  They trade him in his last year for the poo poo platter.  Then they kept trading different parts off the poo platter for more poo poo platters.  It snowballed.  Finally, this season, they may be finally getting free of the avalanch.

Is this what we want to see happen with the Celtics?

So unless there is that Ray for a star trade, Celtics should play this season out with him and let the chips fall where they fall.  Sure, make minor bench trades, but see what this team has left.

If the Celtics are successfull (title or bust) bring Ray back for a two year deal (to end with KG).

If it fails, let Allen go.  Start thinking about trading KG for youth, draft picks, and cap space.  Start the rebuilding.

They shouldn't ever trade Paul Pierce, no matter how hobbled he gets.  That's important, in my opinion, even if it sets back the rebuilding process.

If we move Ray we should try to get younger talent back and also set ourselves up with contracts we can move in the last year of KG's contract.  If we had $20+ million in expiring money in that season, we might be able to start the rebuilding process by trading KG and whoever else we have expiring.

Danny understands the cap a lot better than Isiah and the other NY GMs ever did. I don't think he'll get into purgatory like the Knicks did.

I think so to.

But I wanted to point out what can happen if you go the "Trade at all cost" plan.

Yeah and its a very good point to make. There is no reason to take on longer term money for marginal upgrade to depth.

As long as the contracts don't go beyond 2012 ... I don't mind if the trade package lacks a star so long as it's an upgrade in the short term.

For example, a Hinrich + Salmons + Thomas trade.

If we can get Something like Kevin Martin that would be perfect a guy who can run with Rondo and be the next big thing with Rajon. Now as for KG and Pierce I really think we should never trade them and they should retire Celtics. Allen eh I really like Ray Ray and his jumper is just so sweet and a very good man. I can live with him not being here. But Pierce and KG really need to retire Celtics. Also who says Ray can't retire a Celtic? Say we trade him and he gets bought out or comes back via free agency, I would be all for it. But right now for the future of this franchise and not fall into limbo for the next 5-10 years we need to Trade that expiring deal to get us something to build a bridge while contend.

Boom Boom Pow. TP
KG and Pierce deserve to retire Cetlics. Ray does too, and he can as you said. Three scenarios here to bring back Ray work...

Ray to Washington for Butler + etc - Washington won't resign
Ray to Bulls for Hinrich + etc - Chicago doubtful to resign
Ray to Kings for Kmart package - Kings might buyout

Either way we most likely get him back, next season if not this season. The other point is we wont' have this much money in expiring deals again till Pierce and KG...and they won't be traded(or shouldn't be at least)
Point is, utilize his contract to boost our team and welcome him back as a player with open arms - resign him to a contract length to match KG's and let him retire proud in green
I really feel like Ray could be our Finley to this aged team like the Spurs on their last championship...
Can't stop, Rondo!

If we REALLY wanted to start the rebuilding process now, we could take on bad contracts through 2012 in exchange for picks. That way, come 2012, we'd have Rondo, presumably at least a few good talents from all the picks coming from expirings, and a ton of space under the cap.

We'd be crap for a while, but I'm not sure I care about winning if it's not a championship team. In fact, I'm sure I don't.

what we need to trade for is durability. Is Gilbert Arenas available? I've heard good things about him.
Grab a few boards, keep the TO's under 14, close out on shooters and we'll win.

So are we looking for a Joe Johnson for Rodney Rogers and Tony Delk type deal just so we can say salvaged the season by losing to the Caviliers in 6 games at the ECF.

I pass.

We are facing a blow it up type of scenario at the end of this season so I would rather play this out and determine who we keep and who we unload.
