Just red this article on Boston.com. (Edit: No, I did not purposefully mispel the word "read" but considering the topic of this forumn, I felt is was appropriate to leave it as such  ;D)

http://www.boston.com/news/local/massachusetts/articles/2010/01/07/a_final_win_for_red/

I think it is a great idea and I agree with the comments at the bottom of the article in that we should call it Red's square.  It's easy to say and it would be great to have it be what people call it.  Heck when going to the Garden we could say we're going to Red's square, or call it the Garden at Red's square.  Either way, I will do my best to adopt this.

Let's not forget the man did much more than win basketball games.  He helped push racial integration in a segregated time and city.  Long live Red Auerbach.

Definitely a cool honor.

I'd be less in favor of Red Square, though.  Too communist. ;)

The next logical step would be to get the bronze statue of Red off the bench at Quincy Market and move it into the concourse.  Don't know if that statue is privately owned, or belongs to the city, but it would be a great thing to have Red overseeing all comings and goings at the Garden.

No way!  I just got engaged in front of that statute; I want it to stay right where it is.   8)

In all seriousness, though, I do like having the statute of Red in a place that isn't typically associated with the Celts.  That way, people who don't know any thing about the Celtics are still exposed to Red.

Roy, I certainly understand and support the sentiment you have for the significant role that Red has played in your life at his current spot.

For the record, though, the statue has not always been in that spot.  It has moved at least twice that I can think of.

As for exposing the great unwashed (i.e. those who are not Celtics fans) to Red, I have to wonder how many thousands of rail travelers pass through North Station oblivious to what's going on upstairs.

Oh come on Roy, Americans have always been able to look past little things such as communism.   ;D

But seriously, I also like that Red's Statue (and Larry's shoes for that matter) is over at Fanueil Hall.  It shows that what he did transcended the sports world and he is in fact an important part of Boston history, not just Celtics and NBA history.

Now continuing on what to call the concourse at the Garden, I still think we should call it something that people will use.  If it's named after him and its never used, it is almost a meaningless gesture.  Any ideas on what to call it?

And while we are on this topic, I think its about time we honor Bill Russell in this city.  I know there has been tension on both sides in the past, but I think the city has fully come to appreciate him and vice versa.  It would be a shame if we waited until he passed.

You convinced me.  I withdraw my suggestion.

This pleases me greatly.  I loved and admired all that Red taught us about basketball and how to win in life.

Don't think that will ever happen ... we are in a "new age" where arenas are an advertizing tribute to the primary ownership, and not named after someone who's actually worthy of it, or as a tribute to anyone ... sadly enough.

I'd be all for renaming the TD Garden to the Red Auerbach Memorial Garden, but that's never going to happen...
