Chris Forsberg brought some interesting insight and speculation on Twitter about the waiving of Lester and his possible replacement in the rotation by Lue :

The "insight" is the following :

Quote
Lue had icepacks on his legs after Tuesday's session, indicating increased activity. C's could use a pure backup PG given Rondo's hamstring

And the speculation (which preceded the above tweet) :

Quote
Purely speculation: The Celtics would also need a roster spot if they wanted to coax Tyronn Lue out of retirement ...

I wouldn't be surprised if they signed Lue at this point, but I'd guess they're going to wait until the trade deadline as they might need the roster spot.

Umm I dont think it would take much coaxing. And ice on the knees? He must be doing some really serious player development.

PLEASE tell we are going to do better. We have 2 trade exemptions to use-or-lose. We have expiring contracts.

I'm not gunning for second place I'm ready for # 18!! :D

Don't worry too much about the trade exceptions.  Minimum-salary players can always be acquired in trade without worries about salaries matching.  That means our trade exceptions would only be useful if we wanted to acquire a rookie or second-year player making more than the minimum, but less than around $800k.  There aren't many of those players in the NBA.

hmmm, would Lue fit the same mold as Sam Cassell, ie. a player-coach who may not do much actual playing come playoff time?

Well, I suppose they could bring him back on a 10 day contract, but I doubt it.  I really believe that they brought Lue in as a coach and nothing more.  He looked cooked last year, and Doc really spoke highly of him as a coach.

I wouldn't be surprised if they bring back Hudson on a non-guaranteed deal to give them an emergency PG, and then cut him again when the buyouts start happening after the trade deadline.

Ainge has been in the D-League showcase for the last few days. There's a couple of D-League PGs that I'd rather sign than Lue or Hudson.

As clarification, we can't give a non-guaranteed deal after January 10, although we can give up to two 10-day contracts.

Lue would at least know the system already.

The big thing is saving the Hudson money while we can and then signing someone when when needed. Seems a bit early to commit to Lue.
