My theory is....if it feels like a bust, then it's a bust
I understand the 'feels like a bust' perspective, but I'll offer a counter-argument:
It's a little unfair to label late first and second round picks as busts since almost by definition they are gambles and longshots.  In some years, like Moiso's, the draft class was so bad that lottery picks were like second rounders.

I think 'bust' may be too harsh an assessment on the following guys:
Forte (late 1st round)
Moiso (who really thought he had a chance?)
Pruitt (2nd)
Giddens (last pick in 1st)
Knight (Late 1st and he surprised people by looking decent in his 1st year)
McRoberts (2nd)
Brown (late 1st)
Smith (late 1st and probably mentally ill)

Of course, hype has a lot to do with perception of 'bust' and therefore all Duke guys (like Avery, McRoberts, Langdon) are automatic busts if they don't perform. Add Laetner.

You counter? Oh then please allow me to retort.

It said who are the busts? It did not say "Who are the draft busts"

Therefore when a player is paid an absurd amount of money to perform a service, and he does not then that...my friend..is..a bust.

Further there are some players that are a stretch such as a JR Giddens. When you stretch and said player does not play as though you stretched for him...that..is a bust.

Also if you have a player that was considered a very good college player who came out too soon only to find himself in the nether regions of the NBA such as a Josh McRoberts...bust

Do you mind if I take some of your refreshing beverage to wash down this burger?

Oh I'm sorry. Did I break your concentration? You were saying something about not a bust.

Well let me tell you that when GMs named Wallace draft players he does not care about "best of intentions".  Didn't these players go bust on Mr. Wallace? ANSWER THE QUESTION! Didn't these players go bust on Mr. Wallace? And Mr. Wallace doesn't like the bust of anyone but Mrs. Wallace. What? What language do they speak in What? I ain't heard of no place called What? Say what! Say what one more time!

I'm afraid that I might end up with a cap in my ass trying to counter that last post.

Trepidatiously, I will just say that being an absolute great college basketball player does not mean that makes you a sure fire NBA player. McRoberts, JJ Reddick, Hansborough and other outstanding college players that were chosen late were chosen late because their skills didn't translate to a pro game. Teams knew that going in. So when they don't pan out, I find it hard to call them busts.

Now can me and my hunny bunny just give you your wallet back Mr. Badmuthafa and ease our way on outta here.

Admit JJ Redick a bust! Admit JJ Redick's a bust! Say it!

We cool Jolanta. Say we cool!

Point the gun at me Jolanta. Now we havin a conversation bout busts with Ringo here. But when people say lottery picks that were college stars that don't produce aren't busts I get nervous and when I get nervous I make mistakes and that's bad for Ringo here.

Now I tell you what. I tell you what I'm gonna do. You caught me in a good mood today. So you keep your Tyler Hansbrough, and you keep your Hasheem Thabeet. You keep this wallet.

Then you leave and lead a good life. Ok.
