Maybe it means something maybe it means nothing. For a variety of reasons I have only been able to catch a few Celtics games this year so I don't have a great idea if Rondo is one of the main culprits for this recent hiccup/slide/end of the dream depending on your level of worry.

I know Rondo got to the game extra early to work on his free throws so its seems like he isn't complacent now that he got paid but I thought it was kind of interesting to see the split in our record since he signed on the 2nd

So Rondo signing a new contract has taken the energy out of the rest of the vets on this team?

Funny thing, if the extension did not happen, would we had been seeing the opposite thread?   "We are 5-4 since the deadline for Rondo to get an extension"

I think it is just odd timing.

I don't know, but there's definitely something up with Rondo that he needs to fix.

We need him to be a leader.  We're paying him to be one.  Right now he's looking disinterested.

They need him to play like he is capable of playing.

But he is not the leader on this team.  That still falls on the three (now four) vets.

Rondo and Perk are the leaders of the future.

I know what you mean, and I respect the opinion, but I'm really getting this strong feeling that this is the time for Rondo to step up.  As the Big 3 begin to age (and boy are they doing it), we're going to need Rondo to step up and become the leader.  We've all said it and seen it - as Rondo goes, so goes the Celtics.  Rondo needs to be our leader.

If we could count on Rondo to play well (and aggressively), continue to improve his shot, and give 110% every game, we'd have a 65 win season.  I believe that.

I'd say Rondo has been about the same. Flashes of brilliant play, some truly awful play, some solid games, some low energy games.
To me he seems to be having a similar start to the season as he did last year. His contract extension didn't change my expectations for him much, with the Big 3 around he's still 4th maybe 5th fiddle if you count Sheed so I wasn't expecting him to become the alpha dog overnight. But I did hope to see him continue to develop at the same pace he did before not just repeat the trajectory I saw last season like it seems he's doing now.

+1
rondo and perkins together is the key
both need to step up and play at a high level consistently
on both ends of the floor for the team to maximize the big 3's time left

I wish Rondo would go into attack mode a lot more.  He forced the action and made things happen with penetration a lot more last year.  I'd like him to get back to that.  Make himself a threat and that will open things up for the other guys.  He just isn't attacking the rim very often so far this year.

THAT is precisely the problem.

As our Big 3 ages and declines bit by bit, we need and expect Rondo to step up and continue to improve his game - especially his offensive game.

So far we've seen flashes of brilliance but Rondo hasn't really been much better.  At times he's been worse.

We can't win it all this year if Rondo doesn't continue to improve.  So just playing the same as the the last couple of years isn't going to cut it.  We signed Rondo to an extension because we believed he would improve and become the leader of this team.  Perhaps this is sooner than we can fairly expect him to do that, but we need him now, fair or not.  He needs to step up.

  • Rondo doesn't believe in easy buckets...
Doc should Demand that Rondo takes a minimum of 10-12 shots per game. The problem with Rondo is that teams don't see him as an offensive threat. When the other guys aren't shooting well he has to be the one to score. He seems to defer to the big 3 regardless of how off a night they are having.

It appears that with a renewed contract, Rondo's lost interest in the game because now the check's always in the mail.

All and all, I wonder why he hasn't been working on a jumpshot all along? And why he won't take one with no one on his face?

First, while like many fans I am unhappy with Rondo's performance so far this year, the check is not yet in the mail. The extension does not set in until nexct season.

Second, given all of the things I have read about Rondo, I think he is going to have to mature significantly and have a bit of a personality change if he is going to be a leader.

Third, I read today in the Globe basketball column about how Dahntay Jones has improved his offensive game/shooting this year and is having a career year. Hopefully Rondo can make a note of this and do the same for his shooting.

I don't really believe the signing of Rondo's contract is the reason the team is struggling.

We started off with such a tour de force over the 1st 5 games.

Pierce and Sheed were playing so well, shooting such a high percentage from everywhere.

Rondo was playing superb.

We didn't need great performances from Ray and KG.

Then all of a sudden, all the good stuff we were getting as a team, stopped....all together, and at the same time.

Pierce and Sheed started shooting poorly.

Rondo's game regressed.

The team's defense seemed human.

I just think it is a case of bad timing.

Generally, if you got a stacked team, you can handle struggling from one or two guys, because you got other stars to help bear the negatives.

But it's hard when all facets of the team start to struggle and at the same time.
