Just my opinion for what it is worth. Lebron James has a fathead and by retiring 23 and his wearing of another number can only help create his own image, his own idol worshippers, disconnected and separate from MJ. He probably hates the idea that he affectively shares the same number and glory with MJ. James is full of it like so many NBA players, mediatypes, x nba'ers, etc.. Their self concern with their image, legacy, etc... is so much built on the media's need to sell. So much of them is just media's fabrication and they begin to believe they are really who the media says they are.
Lebron James has no real concern for Michael Jordan. Lebron is concerned about Lebron.

I believe Lebron has genuine admiration for MJ so he does care about the GOAT, but the jersey thing also made Lebron look good too.

Jordan thinks Bird Magic and Russell should be retired first.
"Sam Cassell was heckling on the sideline when I walked down, He looked at me and was like, ‘You're getting the ball, I know you're getting the ball!'
said Allen.

And did Cassell, a man of many words, have anything to say after that?

"No, I told him he needed to wear a tie."
