Very good debate for Marc, but does he block shots (Perk does, as well as Shelden).

We don't need another 7 footer. Perk/Shelden/Sheed are holding the low post down.

And Glen Davis fits better into the team. How many minutes would Gasol play? Can he play multiple positions (Glen can).

In a literal sense, Gasol wins this, but I tend to look at the intangibles as well.
Gasol really wouldn't need to play multiple positions.  He would offer a true backup center.  For the C's, he would allow Sheed and Williams to play PF which is their natural position.

Also, Williams has so far replicated BBD's skill set for offense, provided better defense and much better rebounding thereby making BBD redundant.

If a straight-up trade were offered, do it in a heartbeat.

Well taking into account they play different styles and are asked to different things and one hasn't played this year and the other has accumulated a lot of stats to go with several losses.  I would go with Gasol.

Now I ask you who would want more Kobe or Bill Walker?

I'd rather have Glen Davis, because he is a more of a scorer. His rebounding needs work, but that will come in time.

How often do big mens' rebounding rates improve after they've been in the league a few years?  I can't think of a single instance where a medicore rebounder improved significantly; more often, the rebounding numbers decline.  I'm sure there are some cases where guys have gotten better on the glass, but I'd wager than nineteen times out of twenty, a big man's best rebounding rate occurs early in their career and declines over time.

I would think that it happens quite a bit.  I mean logic tells me that a player that doesn't start for the first few years on a very talented team may indeed rebound better when he gets more minutes and learns certain nuances of the NBA game. I don't actually have any facts to back that up.  Just an assumption.

Let's see.. who would I pick?

Player 1 is a superior rebounder, defender, scorer, free throw shooter, shot blocker, who has started out this season with a bang.

Player 2, in relation to 1, is an inferior rebounder, defender, scorer, free throw shooter, shot blocker, and has started out this season by getting in a fight and breaking his thumb.

I see no reason why this poll should be anything but 100% to 0%.

I like Davis, but Gasol is a better player.

Davis is a better defender than Gasol in pretty much every aspect other than shot blocking.

That's a scary thought, Gasol really has to step that aspect of his game up.

What's the point of this question?  Is there any reason to believe we'd actually have to make this choice?

In any case, the answer is obvious.  Marc Gasol is a potential 20-10 guy.  Glen Davis is not.

I don't agree.  While Davis might be a decent 1 on 1 defender, I think he's most definitely sub part at reading rotations and getting to his spot on time.  This caused the Celtics, with him on the floor, to give up way more points than they should have.  I'm not saying Gasol is a great defender by any means, but he'd do a better job in the Celtics system.

  • Let them hate, as long as they fear
Since I lived thru the 80"s Celtic mentality of not trading any of their top aging talent till it was too late and it cost us 20 years of irrevelancy thereafter; I would like management to consider next yaer, doing away with Ray Allen and going full force after Joe Johnson, who I understand will be a free agent. Allen still has value but lets get real; his best years are over. JJ is younger and can create his own shot better than RA can. I think JJ can work within our system and will be as good or even a better offesnive weapon than RA. Neither is a top rebounder  nor defender so there they are a washout, but offensively, I believe at this stage of their lives, JJ will give us more for the buck. Withe the kind of money it will take us to re-sign RA, we can go after JJ. Maybe there will be other SF's free agent in JJ's offensive category which might do as well or better. I just dont recall their names right now.
The only other move I would make if it was within my power to make would be to trade Perkins for Kaman. Kaman is a much better scorer and is no slouch as a rebounder. Chemistrywise; I dont know. But I believe kaman would be an upgrade over Perks. I would not make any other moves with the starting 5. Go ahead; shoot me.
And someday in the midst of time,
When they ask you if you knew me
Remember that you were a friend of mine

this is true.  Either a player has the knack or he doesn't.  And players are more energetic and athletic early in their careers.  Baby is never going to be a good rebounder.

Agreed. Unless you went to LSU or something I see this as the easiest poll decision I've made on a sports sight
