I love it when people see "the media" as like one giant building in Manhattan that's just bubbling over with SECRET AGENDAS!! Seriously, the media isn't somehow plotting to trick people into thinking LeBron won the game, they're showing highlights of him because he's extremely popular, he's the best player alive, and most importantly, because he had the best individual highlights even though his team lost. Viewers=money, and both LeBron and spectacular plays=viewers. All of the handwringing and persecution complexes here are easily explained by some combination of this and simple confirmation bias.
Dominique Wilkins had a lot of highlight clips in L's too - didn't mean there was some shadow conspiracy to make him into an illegitimate champion or whatever the heck people think the secret endgame of the NBA-media cabal is. It meant he was fun to watch, so people liked to watch him, so the media pushed his highlights out to their viewers. Same with Jordan before he won anything. Same with LeBron. Same with whatever wildly popular but unaccomplished guy comes after LeBron.
The only thing I'd like to see change is for the NBA to move from promoting individuals to teams. They're running this show, and I think that's reasonable. The media in general isn't biased toward anything except whatever they think will make them the most money. If the viewers start clamoring to hear more about successful teams and less about outstanding individuals, the coverage will change overnight. Me, I'm happy with the W, and happy to not be overhyped like LeBron will always be.
There's no "secret agenda" ... they make no disguise of it, and never have ... the NBA and the media's number one priority is making money, to the exclusion of all else, including at times integrity and fairness. Every fan has a right to complain, because both organizations advertise and claim to be most concerned with the viewers and bringing the highest quality product possible to the public. Is showing mostly highlights of LeBron, (in a game that he lost), instead of the winning players staying to that course?
I'm sure the fans in Cleveland think so, but let's be fair, no matter who you like or don't like, the winning team should have earned the majority of the highlights. The problem is the NBA and the media sees the profits of the future coming from icons like Kobe and LeBron, not teams or the team concept, or clubs that stress working as a unit, or anything remotely approaching integrity and character. Those people who love those icons or don't mind being force-fed what the money-making machine is offering up, are happy to go along with it, and that's their right.
But it's also
our right to complain, (when we're just as much a part of that public who's footing the bill), if we feel there's an inbalance in the way things are reported and covered, or we feel our team isn't getting the same amount of promotion as those players and icons that the NBA and media see as their primary source of income for the future. Frankly, I'm just plain tired of it, and I want to see my team get the accolades they deserve. Will my and others' complaining make any difference? Probably not ... but we'll never know if we don't try, and whether it does any good or
not, it's our right to do so, and it helps us feel a bit better to vent.
