I believe it will vary depending on the match-up.  Doc has shown a history of mixing and matching, and I think he'll do the same this season.

In one series he may decide to use Sheed primarily as a back-up depending on who the C is on the other team.  The next series it could be Baby.  Baby did a fantastic job on Tim Duncan for instance, and Doc may prefer to go to that match-up if the teams were squaring off, and let Sheed roam at PF.

This is the great thing about having such a diversely talented group of big men.

Unless Sheed is playing like crap, I don't see any matchup situation in which he'll bring out Baby before Sheed. It just wont happen.

How about ilgauskas who Baby has had great success against before?  Or how about Duncan as in the example I gave in my first post?  You think this is impossible (unless Sheed is playing like crap?)

Yep. Sheed is a better defender anyways.

Now if during the course of a game Davis looks like he's doing a better job than Sheed, then Davis will get the playing time. But coming in first off the bench? I can come up with a scenario in which our players are healthy and Davis getting the nod other than Sheed playing like crap.

I guess we understood the OP's question differently.  I was assuming he was asking "who will be the back-up C?", to which I still believe will be determined upon match-ups.  If the question is, which big will normally be coming off the bench first then I would say Wallace.

Great poll idea, especially the option for bill walker.. that made me laugh lol.

A few counters and ideas:

-TP to the poster who stated that the difference between Perkin's Defense and Rasheed's is a smaller gap than they are offensively.  It's not even close.

-Where is "Rasheed Wallace" is not a center coming from?  According to 82games, Detroit's most successful lineups (top 2) are with rasheed at center and mcdyess on the bench.  He can guard most every center in the league.  While Big Al was more of a PF, when asked who defended him the best in the league Big Al commented, "definitely rasheed wallace.  He is so hard to go against"  I'll never forget that.

-Personally I think Perk should start, but at some point I think it'd be interesting to see a lineup (even if it's just 4 min into the game to throw the other team off) with Rasheed in for Perk.

-IMO bbd is more likely to be used as a backup-backup center than a backup PF.  Or at least that is where he's better suited.  Let Scal play backup PF.. he's not as good at center.

-Perk really doesn't hinder rondo/pierce driving... at least not what I saw.  Perkins is the best finisher around the rim on the team, and benefited a great number of times from rondo drive and dishes.  You can't leave Perk alone.

I vote for PERK!!!

Wow.  this poll is insulting to Sheed.
Sheed should start, and obviously Perk is the second best center on the team.

Center Depth
1. Sheed
2. Perk
3. Scal
4. Williams
5. BBD

Is it really a debate that Sheed and Perk are our best centers?  What is the point of this poll?  How about a poll for who starts, and a poll for who finishes games.

Has it ever occurred to you that Sheed doesn't want to start at this stage in his career?  That is probably one of the reasons he chose the Celtics over other contenders where he would have started.

Perk.

Ouch.  Perk has earned the right to start, and he's a much better defensive player than Rasheed.  Our starting lineup already has plenty of scoring and spacing.

No need for ouch, Sheed brings a ton to the table. I think that gap between Sheed's and Perk's defense is lower than the gap in their offense, particularly how how they'll affect the unit.

Anyways, see no reason to exclude him in the poll.

I actually think KG and Sheed is a terrible combo, especially to start the game. Neither of them prefers to play in the post and Perk is a capable post player whose game fits nicely next to both of them.

I agree with you that it feels right to start Perk, but I have to admit I get all sorts of tingles when I picture Sheed walzing in at the 6 minute mark for 4 minutes of KG/Sheed/PP/Ray/Rondo domination.

This is an interesting topic, TP to the OP.

My vote goes to Sheed as the first big off the bench regardless with Big Baby Davis playing the bulk of the backup center minutes. This means if Perk leaves the floor, KG follows within a few minutes and vice versa. All four will play together some and overlap minutes.

I think one factor that hasnt been mentioned is Sheed's age. he is being talked about here by some as if he were 5 years younger. I anticipate great contributions from Sheed this year, but only for about 20-25 mpg. Anything more will be gravy IMO, but could also be dangerous to his durability come playoff time.

This is not to say he is washed up or anything, but I just dont see the ability to play big minutes anymore. While we are on the subject, Garnett may be looking at this sub 30 minute boat soon as well.

I am sure to be in the minority here, but if the minutes were something like: Perk 30, KG 30, Sheed 20, Davis 16, and Williams/Scalabrine for every possibly garbage minute that Big Baby doesnt get for example, I think we will be in great shape for the playoffs with an excellent record.

just about pt by pt agreement there!
A platoon should back up perk which means Perk starts no doubt.  I can see Garnett getting c minutes in a running small game.  Think rondo, allen/house , PP/daniels , scal and KG.  Davis against low post centers duncan/shaq.  He has proven to be good against both those guys.    I'd assume though sheed is backup c and I don't care which spot he plays pf or c.  A very good player.  I would like to see a steady rotation (doc!).  Sheed 1st big off bench but to me williams/davis should have pf minutes and as billysan posted keep kg/sheeds minutes down.  The entire season we want a smooth running team just like last year before injuries but this year health and rest!!  I don't care if we win the atlantic.  Rondos ankles are bothering him, rest him.  PP needs a break, last year he was out of gas.  Celtics win championships , who cares about the best record and/or winning the division.
