Hey guys, I am currently temping at a job and hoping to be employed full time.  My immediate boss has had a complaint filed about her that is not true and she didnt do anything wrong.  She has asked me to fill out a statement saying that I agree with her side.  The only thing is that she is not the most popular person here and I dont want to make other people higher up mad at me by siding with my immediate boss.

What do you think I should do, side with my boss since I know she is right or decline to fill out the statement and risk making my immediate boss mad at me but not risk making the higher ups mad at me?

thanks for your help in advance

This situation SUCKS.

Personally, I would side with whatever the truth is and stick by it. It might not be popular, and who knows what will happen, but for me I'd go truth. That's just me though and you'll get other opinions here.

Regardless, good luck man I hope it works out okay.

Yup.  And save all documentation.  If you feel that there is evidence that they hold it against you, when applying for a full-time position, then you can always file a grievance.

More importantly though, I think you should be talking to someone from HR right now, rather than us.  If they are aware that there are shady dealings going on from the beginning, and they can get your story documented, it will make things go a lot smoother in the future.  Their job is to protect you and your rights, and you need to take advantage of that.

Ya, I dunno about HR though because im currently working through a temp agency and not the company itself.  Also im working for the Veterans Administration so its the government.(If that makes a difference, I dunno)

Just tell the truth. Your current boss have your back, and you can prove your worth to the higher ups after. Don't make a big deal out of it though.

If I were you I would without hesitation side with your boss.  Not because she is your boss but because you are doing what is right.  Remember her job is on the line as well, how would you feel if the situation were reversed and the one person you knew had evidence to prove your innocence turned your back on you?

Sure she may not be liked around the office but that should not hold any weight when making your decision, because your decision upholds your integrity and honesty.  That I feel will go much further with management then you withholding the truth.

Just do whats right and in the long run, the right answers become so much easier to make.  You will feel much better about yourself and the situation.

If you really, really like your job, I think it depends on who has more power over hiring decisions -- your immediate boss, or the higher ups. If you already have the full time job, then it's easy to just "go with what's right." But I think you have to look after yourself first... Depending on the situation, if you think she is going to be gone no matter how many supporting statements she gets, then it might not be in your best job interest to side with her. But if the claims are indeed silly, she has direct hiring powers, and it's likely that she's set to stay, then supporting her could help you get that full time position...

But if you don't like your job and can easily get another one, you probably would sleep better going with the truth.

I think one thing to consider is why is it your immediate boss isn't liked? is there a track record of misbehavior and this is the one time he/she is actually in the right? if that's the case I'd respectfully decline to help.  If you feel this person is being unfairly singled out (and think they'll still be with the company in a few years) then help out.  You don't want to put your neck on the line for someone who wouldn't do the same for you imo.

Also check out my job advice thread, I need some too! =)

she usually isnt the model employee and this is the one instance where she is actually in the right.  However since it is the government it is very tough for somebody to actually get fired and lose their job.  So she will probably be here for a while.

The thing is though is that people filed this complaint through my immediate boss's boss who is the one putting my name out there to other departments trying to get me hired full time.  So I dont wanna do something that would make her mad since she is actively putting her neck out for me.  And what makes it worse is that she is on vacation this week so she would come back to this report on her desk as opposed to me talking to her about it first

Even though you are not working for the company directly, the people who may be doing some dirty practices do, and if these things are happening, the only way to stop them is by reporting them, and building up documentation on it.
