I hope for his sake that he signs soon and plays well.  I never had a problem with Manny.  He was (is?) a frustrating player because he plays at 95%, not 100%.  But I don't feel that Boston got a raw deal with him, so hard for me to feel bitter or anything like that.  It was clear that Boston wanted to trade him for a few years, clear Manny wouldn't mind being traded, finally a situation that benefited both sides worked out...
I wasn't going to be bitter about it (I'm generally not a bitter guy) until Manny ripped the Boston fans, who love him and have honestly done nothing but support him for the whole time he played in Boston. He said that the fans care too much, and basically that they don't have their priorities straight. For some perspective, while the NY fans will boo A-Rod after he strikes out a couple of times, Sox fans have given Manny long standing ovations in his first at bat back from each of his numerous benchings and phantom injuries.

This is clearly the greatest signing of all time. To get the 3rd best hitter in the league for 45 Mill is a bargain to say the least. There has to be a boatload of teams regretting not throwing 60 Mill/3 years out there. The Dodgers just went from last to first in the NL West.

not in this market.

I think I would rather have Adam Dunn for 2 years 20 million total.

Or Abreu for 5 million.

not that those guys are better, but they arent significantly worse and the money is much better...

I think he had two options at $20 million each.

The options were held by the Sox.  So, if he gets hurt this year or has a terrible year, then his net gain over 2 years at $45MM is more than the $5MM (because the Sox would have declined his option).  So, still not a horrible deal.  Plus, playing in LA is a cakewalk for him compared to the fish bowl existence in Boston.

That said, I glad he didn't get more after screwing the Sox.

He plays hard most of the time, but it's easy to see when he wasn't running out groundballs to first, do you get mad at Ortiz for doing the same thing though?  Ortiz doesn't run out ground balls either.  The thing is, he's a top 3 hitter in the game.  He's not going to help the ball club out by running out a groundball to first, he's going to be out regardless.  Is anyone worth 25 mil a year?  Probably not, but Manny deserves to be one of the highest paid in baseball.  I'd still love to have him on the Red Sox over Jason Bay.
