I find it impossible for any center who has ever been coached HS or college bb to not have been told (and shown very graphically) ad nauseum how to get down low and put his A$$ on the opposing player and seal him BEHIND you, until exploding to rip down the rebound (or until a teammate does).

But what if the player is very weak? For instance, what if for whatever reason, the team's center is Rondo? Should he be told to box Shaq out until after the ball hits the rim?

If a scrub like POB is only marginally stronger than Rondo, would the result be any different? I recall watching Garnett in a game last year wherein Perkins was an injure DNP. Granted, it was preseason, but it was against the hated Knicks, and the intensity was ramped up to near playoff level. Still, playing center full time, Garnett was destroyed by Eddie Curry. After the loss, Garnett (last year's DPOY) himself admitted how tough it was to check a guy like Curry.

What does that mean for a guy like POB who may in fact have only half the leg and body strength as Garnett? If he is too slow to play PF, should he box out at all, or just go after the ball like he has been?

I'm not trying to make excuses for POB's ineffectiveness. I'm just want to hear how a coach would best place such a player in a position to succeed (or in this case, to minimize liability).

I thought this post was going to be about the lack of boxing out... it wasn't though.
