Working on the very unsure premise that the Red Sox are going back to the World Series, I want to see them play the Dodgers. Now, if both the Sox and Tampa can finish off their respective series, I think the Sox are in for a huge battle with Tampa - and I'm excited about seeing some more excellent playoff baseball, really think about it, the ALCS has been the highlight of the 2 World Series runs. The World Series has been a crowning achievement, but the competition just hasn't been there.
I want to see a series with some juice. St. Louis did offer some history with the nostalgic rematches of the `46 and `67 7 game losses for Boston. Colorado had zero in that category. Both World Series were, of course, memorable for what they represented, but the games were generally one-side and the Sox swept both series.
A matchup with the Dodgers offers so much (though maybe, in the end, it would still be equally uncompetitive...maybe not). There's the obvious Manny story line, and it would be a story line the likes of which MLB hasn't had in a World Series for a long, long time. It would be the most high profile World Series since the Subway Series (another one that proved to one sided).
There is the ex-Sox contingent in Derek Lowe, Nomar (bench rider), and, of course, Manny. There's the Joe Torre vs Terry Francona angle.
I just think it would be something great for baseball. Of course, it would hurt extra bad if the Sox lost, but at least you'd feel like there's some real extra oomph to it.
Now...GO AND MAKE IT HAPPEN SOX & DODGERS!
