Honestly he only pitched 5 to 6 innings and its a strange coincidence the redsox still most of those games never lost. (at least 3 or 4 more no decisions or loses from blown saves did not occur)

But what happens in my opinion is that dice k throws so many pitches to his hitters one by one , it really throws them off for the rest of the game no matter who pitches to them. Dice K has like 3 or 4 strange unorthodox looking pitches coming at you and he takes his sweetime with a strange jerky motion when he pitches. Compared to other pitchers who all have the north american timing. (even something this small could throw off a hitter)

Other than this , dice K like the announcers quite often express, is that he loves to hit those corners around the strike zone . When he is off , he is really ineffective and walks alot of batters, but when he is on, he is greg maddux. The most important thing dice k needs to do with every batter is get that first pitch to be a strike.

I really thought dice k was a bad pickup by epstein, especially from the tail end of last year and even this year even if he won 18 games(i thought it was lucky). However he is proving me wrong slowly.

whats your take on dice k

Dice K approaches the game unlike any other pitcher ive ever seen--its facinating. While most pitchers are more likely to throw a strike down the middle when they are behind in the count--especially with men on base--dice k is less likely. in fact he is more likely to throw a risky strike when he is ahead and when there are no men on base. its the opposite of most any other pitcher in the game. and whatever you might criticize him for (eg his inability to consistently pitch deep into games and his tendency to give up big innings)--and the end of the day he is 18-3 with a 2.7 or so era. clearly it has to do with the diversity of his arsenal and his confidence in throwing them all where he wants. but its fun to look into deeper. there's all kinds of crazy stats about him this year. for example, his walks to earned runs ratio is among the highest ever recorded.

I blame the TBS broadcasters for him losing the no hitter in the 7th. As soon as he finished the 6th they said "Dice-K has a no hitter through 6". Orsillo and Remy never would have done that, so either those national guys no nothing about baseball or they want the Rays to win.

i think people have high expectations because of his salary upon entering the league, but remember, he's only 28 and this is just his second year in the majors. Even a stud like Beckett didn't hit above 16 wins until he was 27, his seventh season pitching against major leaguers. Schilling hit his stride mid twenties after several years of major league pitching. He's not a blow-by pitcher either, so his job will get easier and he'll improve as he learns to work counts and use his pitches to stay ahead of batters.

He's letting the batter know who's boss.

daisuke refuses to give the hitters a ball down the heart of the plate. so if they're patient they can draw walks, but when dice-k gets into a jam he can throw is fast ball for GB's of K's. i always find myself saying "if you just threw your fastball like that to the first batter he wouldn't be standing on third base right now" but his ERA, K's, and AVG against is just impecable.

Yup, and they mentioned Drew had hit into 11 double plays the pitch before he hit into one.

Of course they also mentioned that Youkilis was 0-for-17 against Shields in his career...and that Pena would be taking on 3-0 in the 8th...

I think ignoring the talking about the no-hitter taboo was there way of declaring their neutrality.  Or maybe they just were mentioning it because, well, he had a no-hitter through 6 and they felt no one had noticed it.
Yup

his numbers are very similar to lester's, the only big difference is lester has more IP (200+ to 167) and less BB (94 to 66).  other than that, their numbers are very close.  it just seemed that lester was more dominant, meaning he had more 1-2-3 innings than Dice.
very impressed by last nights outing, (TBS couldn't have used the phrase 'he doesn't give in to hitters' enough that i should have taken a shot whenever they said that, of course i wouldnt have made it to the 6th).

did any1 see that pruitt dunk last night?  that was pretty sweet

Dice k indeed throws a gyroball

http://mlb.mlb.com/media/video.jsp?mid=200810103609321

The carl crawford strikeout was just nasty

Slider for right hand pitcher = starts at the middle and then slightly curves to the left of the plate (close to fastball velocity)

Gyroball = same as a slider but curves instead to the right of the plate

screwball = slower velocity and break from beginning to end big

Dice k throws the gyro, and he throws it alot
