After an emotional year in which Rivers lost his father, Grady, in November, there had been some concern that he might consider leaving coaching for a return to television. With approximately $5.5 million a season in the new deal – and postseason incentive clauses that could drive his annual total to $7 million – to go with a chance to win more titles, Rivers never seriously considered walking away.

The Celtics and coach Doc Rivers have agreed on a contract extension that will keep him in Boston through the 2010-2011 season.
The deal should be official within a few days, but Rivers is expected to make $5.5 million a season with postseason incentives that could increase his salary as high as $7 million. After a 24-58 record in 06-07, Rivers was the runner-up for coach of the year last season. More championships could be on the horizon, and good karma abounds in Beantown.

I was one of Doc's biggest detractors two seasons ago, but as constituted I'm very pleased (though not at all surprised) to have Doc back.  Good players coach, as long as he's got great assistant coaches around him he's perfect for what the C's need right now.  Signing him through 2011 will settle the players we've got on long term contracts down too.

Credit where credit is due, Doc got his team to play their asses off and win an NBA title.

The only thing that sucks is that it's pretty obvious Coach Thib will only be around for another year. I had high hopes of him being the new head coach, and there's no way they win Banner 17 without him.

In this situation, however, there is no way you don't give Doc a new deal.

Some might argue whether Doc deserves this contract, especially given its length, but I think he probably earned a couple years worth of it considering the season he had.

I like that it's incentive laden. All things remaining equal, I'd like to see this coaching staff kept together until such time as it is proven that they aren't being effective or they have better offers elsewhere.

And I just want to echo the words of others that I hope something is forthcoming on the status of Coach T.

I don't have a link to back this up, but I thought I remembered hearing that he only wanted a one year deal. This would obviously give him the chance to see if any head coaching jobs open up next season.

We need to face the fact that he's on his way out. Can't fault him for it either, he deserves his big payday.

Good for him. Plus it's never good to have a "lame duck" coach. Now he can lead the team without having questions about his return being asked, or himelf wondering- or even the players thinking about it - we have Doc, Pierce, KG and Allen for the next couple years - let's see what we can do!
