Not signing Posey...is about 2010...and beyond and it's the right move.

First a couple thigns are Posey moving on:
Personally, I think this was good and bad for Posey
Good: Yes, he's locked into $25Mil. With us over three years, he would have been locked into about $18-19 mil. So he secured more money which is good for him, can't blame him.

Bad: If Posey thinks he's gonna sniff a championship in New Orleans he is sorely mistaken. NO has zero sack under the rim and won't as long as Chandler is playing center for them. When push comes to shove deep in the playoffs, they will not be getting by the Spurs, Lakers or Rcokets anytime soon. Let alone Utah.

For us, I think this is about 2010 and beyond. Think about it. 2010 is one of the biggest free agencies in a long time.

Garnett and Pierce will be 32 & 33 respectively. They'll still have another good three years in them. They are that kind of athletes.

Ray & Scal will be off the books. Ray maybe resigns in a Michael Finley role at 35 years old.

Ainge will be looking to target some young Free agent who can pair up with Pierce and Garnett for a few more title runs before they are done.

Pierce and Garnett will come off in successive years thereafter, and each time Ainge will replace them with another big time free agent to keep rolling.

In the meantime, if he can win another championhsip in the next two years by piecing together the bench, that's what he's going to do.

He wants as much Flex as possible in 2010

In 2010 Ainge adds a big time free agent alongside KG and PP, Ray comes off the bench for a mid level deal or similar.

When KG and Pierce retire...Ainge has:

Perkins ( maybe Erden and O'Bryant)
Big Baby / Powe
Big time free agent from 2010?
Giddens / TAllen
Rondo / Pruitt

and KG and Pierce's money coming off the book?

I have no complaints...

In the meantime, I'd like to see Matt Barnes, TAllen and house signed soon; Barnes brings a very similar energy as Posey does and skills( can shoot the three, hard fouls and tough D ) Sign him. Of Miles will work if healthy.

You never, ever, ever, ever overpay for role players.  I loved Posey and his man-hugs, but not at 25 million for 4 years.

Posey and House were great pickups last year when they were underpaid.  House can probably be resigned cheaply, but New Orleans just paid long-term starter money to a defensive bench 3-point shooter.

We need to find the next Posey and House.  Undervalued guys who fit in to our system.  I really hope we keep House because there doesn't seem to be big interest out there for him.

Also, you have Garnett and Pierce with the wrong age.  Garnett is already 32 and Pierce will  be 31 when next season starts.

If you've even spent a second of your life to learn about salary cap and all the business that goes on behind the scenes.
You would then realize it was impossible for us to offer the deal that the Hornets offered Posey.

I mean seriously, people are acting like we just lost Kevin Garnett or Paul Pierce.  Chill out.  Sure Posey was a great bench player, but the Celtics will find their rotation, life will go on and we will still be a powerhouse in the NBA.

and hey, maybe dumb sports analysts will once again say, "Boston will not win the title" and we'll all get to sit back with a smirk and crossed arms while our boys in green take it to the competition.

Your plan is flawed for a variety of reasons.  First the most obvious: if the end result when Pierce and Garnett retire are to have this lineup as you put it:

Perkins ( maybe Erden and O'Bryant)
Big Baby / Powe
Big time free agent from 2010?
Giddens / TAllen
Rondo / Pruit

what would Posey signing a four year contract do to that other than change "Big time free agent from 2010" to "Big time free agent in 2012"?

Moreover, who's to say that this team is going to land a "big time free agent" at all?  Right now Pierce and Garnett are going to account for 40 million themselves.  Add in Perkins and you're at about 45.  That's also not counting Giddens, Powe, Davis, Pruitt, not to mention Rondo's contract extension. 

Even if they manage to clear enough cap room to sign a big time free agent, who is to say that one that's worthwhile is going to be available?  Who is to say that even if one is available that one is going to want to sign a long term deal with two aging superstars? 

Not signing Posey sounds great if you assume two things: 1) we can win a title without him and 2) we can actually do something with that "flexibility" that Danny talks about. 

I hope we can do both, but both are easier said than done.

To the OP: Barnes can't shoot the 3. He's a very mediocre long-range shooter. And he may be tough, but the only good defense he plays is against perimeter oriented power-forwards.

But these are a lot of "ifs" given the fact that at least for right now Ainge has weakened the team.  Maybe he wants to trade Ray.  Maybe some team will want his expiring salary.  And maybe there's a team that wants his salary that will actually offer us something worthwhile.  More likely any team that wants Allen will try to give us a bunch of mediocre role players with longer contracts OR will give us young prospects unready to be able to help the team before Pierce and Garnett leave/decline. 

I'm not trying to be overly negative; Ainge may look like a genius for not signing Posey in a few years.  However, I feel that after our abundance of luck last season in finding two teams looking to deal two superstars for youngsters and picks that people now assume that clearing cap room will automatically yield free agents and expiring contracts will instantly net superstars in return.
