Sometimes we can forget that we are not negotiating with Posey or with any other player. We are negotiating with their agents. Agents aren't as sentimental as players. They will encourage players to seek more money, and often that is good advice. They are professional negotiators, and GMs need to be the same.

Often, the agent will say they want money that they know they might not get, but they have to try. The team and the agent both need to try to get the deals that will be best for them individually.

The idea of signing anyone "at all costs" is bad business, and sounds more like hyperbole than any kind of legitimate suggestion. You don't have to do that and shouldn't do that. You need to get an idea of what the market is, make an offer that you feel is fair, and prepare for the possible outcomes.

He's basically saying that we need to re-sign Pose just not put ourselves in a bad financial situation because of it...

I just hope that Danny doesn't let this drag out too much... he should really start improving his chances on the rest legitimate free-agents before they go off the market too, maybe he should simply move on from Posey instead of playing this waiting game.

Not put ourselves in a bad financial situation? The majority of NBA teams are over the cap every single year, so really what it comes down to is how much Wyc is willing to pay when his star players shoot his team's salary way over the cap into luxury tax territory and the team isn't contending anymore, which is probably gonna be the last year or two of Posey's contract. However, the team's shooting for championships right now, and let's not take this year's run for granted: these things don't happen frequently anymore now that there's such fierce competition around the league. We need to go for it while we still can. The way I see it, you're gonna be over the cap in a few years anyways, just overpay him now for being the shut-down defensive player and perimeter sharpshooter that he is.

I swear to god I'm not Mark Bartelstein.
