I don't post here very often but I feel like this is a good time to let you all know how I feel about this year's team. I am 20 years old and a life-long Celtics fan from Brookline, MA. Unfortunately I have never had the opportunity to witness our team win a championship or even come close to one, given that our last championship was won in 1986. Despite being born in 87, I have come to truly appreciate and respect the past of this storied franchise which has won more championships that any other professional team and has formed a type of mythical excellence in the process. Having watched limited footage of past greats such as Russell and Bird, I cannot help to think that our time has come again. It would be no exaggeration to say that the 90's was a disaster for the Celtics. Not to take anything away from them but it seemed as though every one was a bandwagoning Bulls fan during that time. Having said this, I always remained faithful to the Green and supported them through thick and thin. The Celtics were entrenched in mediocrity throughout the 90's and some bad luck accompanied that as far as the draft went. The clover didn't seem to bring us much luck my whole lifetime up till this season. From tragic deaths to missing out on promising big men like Duncan and Oden, it was a challenge to remain optimistic about the Celtics. I always had a passion for basketball so my attention never diverted from the Celtics, although I am also a Pats and Sox fan. Kevin Garnett was always one of my favorite players. I thought the combination of his sense of unity and all-around skills made him the ultimate basketball player. I was convinced that he would remain a Timberwolf his whole career but used to dream of what it would be like for him to be a Celtic. When I played NBA Live back in the 90's I would always trade Garnett to the Celtics. The draft lottery happened to be on May 22nd last season, which is my birthday. I was hoping this would be a good omen and that the luck of our beloved team would be overturned. The events of that day made me sick to my stomach, I could not believe my eyes when the Celtics got the 5th pick. I felt like my birthday had been cursed and it spoiled the day completely. The next month I decided to watch the draft even though I was torn by the results of the lottery. Ainge pulled off the trade for Ray Allen and it left me scratching my head and wondering how this could work out. Little did I know that this move would facilitate one of the biggest trades in Celtic history. The following month I was on vacation on a remote island with no more than 100 people on it. Needless to say, I didn't have much access to a TV or the internet. One day I found the only place on the island that had internet access and decided to check the Celtics website. It was a couple days after the trade had gone down and once again I had trouble believing what I saw. A smiling KG on the front of the Celtics site holding up his jersey for all to see. I pretty much leaped about 5 feet in the air when I saw this. I really liked Big Al's potential and his style of play, but acquiring KG made me permanently ecstatic. The regular season lived up to all the hype that followed the blockbuster trade. The trade also bumped Mr. McHale up a few spots on my all-time favorite Celtic players list. I know one day I'll be sharing this story with my kids. This season has been very rewarding in the sense that the success was so overdue and the way in which the team has bonded, from Big Baby to the Big Ticket. I am sure I'm not alone when I say winning number 17 would make Celtic nation rejoice and give us all a much needed uplifting. Good luck to our Celtics and hopefully we'll be celebrating another title soon. I can only imagine the riveting emotion that will go through the entire organization and all the fans.
