I would've liked 62 games. That's 75%. I'd be fine with a player missing 20 games and winnings MVP.
Since Bill Russell in 1958, in a full season there are only 2 players to ever win the MVP playing less than 72 games, Walton in 1978 and Embiid last year. The NBA made the rule, to protect the integrity of the game and the awards since they don't trust the media to do the right thing.
I assumed it was as a measure taken against excessive load management. It gives players more incentive to play more games if they can't get their awards (and thus, their money) if they miss too many games.
