seems that way. but every day no team signs Grant to an offer sheet is more of a chance he is back with the celtics IMO.

#Celtics technically maintain up to 4 roster spots with Champagnie, Kornet, Banton all partial or non-guaranteed through opening night or January. Flexibility for camp competitions, a Blake Griffin return or bigger moves.

Interesting.  I had not heard that Banton was only partially guaranteed for this year.

Looks like Spotrac has updated the information on Banton's contract again.  It first listed 2 years guaranteed, than it was updated to 1 year guaranteed:

Quote
Dalano Banton signed a 2 year / $4,216,676 contract with the Boston Celtics, including $200,000 guaranteed, and an annual average salary of $2,108,338. In 2023-24, Banton will earn a base salary of $2,019,706, while carrying a cap hit of $2,019,706 and a dead cap value of $200,000.

2023-24: $200,000 guaranteed, $1,009,853 guaranteed Opening Night, fully guaranteed 1/10/24
2024-25: Club Option/$217,533 guaranteed (if TO exercised), $1,098,485 guaranteed Opening Night, fully guaranteed 1/10/25

I like this a lot better.  Gives the Celtics lots of flexibility.  I think Kornet is going to make the team and be on the roster to start the season (sorry Roy, I know you are not a big fan), so I see it as having 3 available spots still.

I wonder if what they have offered Giles (if anything) is an Exhibit 9 contract (camp only), vs. a 2-way deal or Exhibit 10 deal.  There could be enough concern with his injury history that they want to see more than a practice video or staged workout before committing to him.

It's good to see that Brad hasn't completely lost his marbles.  $200k guaranteed to a scrub makes a lot more sense.

I hope that softens your stance on the signing.

Based on what I saw at summer league, I do think he’s a viable NBA deep bench guy, and so I expect him to make it through training camp.  But the Celtics aren’t bound to him if something better comes along between now and opening day.

I think he's garbage, but I'd rather spend $200k on garbage as opposed to $2+ million.

If Banton plays minutes this season, the Celtics are in trouble. He’s just not any good

I don't know much about Banton overall, but I feel like most franchises don't let 6'7+ young ball handlers walk for next to nothing. I would assume the rest of his game is pretty bad haha

He’s a 2nd-tier prospect at best, but part of Toronto’s problem is that they already were overloaded with 6’7”+ ball handlers, and need someone who can actually shoot, which Banton cannot.  You need someone to play garbage time, and he’s a good enough candidate while he goes to daily shooting clinics to try to make him more useful down the road.
