If they count as regular season games, then I think all the teams would take it seriously, especially if the bonus was good enough.

On the other hand, this could also be a discrete way to decrease the number of games in a season, which might be why they're toying with it.

These maths don't work, but think something like 72 games for everyone, 77 games for the winner & second place in the In-Season Tournament (5 games to win).

Allows your very best teams to get some rest as to 'not distract' from the In-Season tournament; adds some spice to the mid-season which has never really survived the internet-age's infinite options for other things to pay attention to, even as the league gets more popular; makes things slightly more interesting depending on the bonus.

I can’t imagine this tournament would ever replace 5 - 10 games worth of revenue per team.  That’s a gigantic issue with shortening the schedule.

Yeah very good point -  just trying to think about how they square the circle of ‘extracurricular’ games vs regular season games (beyond playoffs).

Also, because change scares me, I am not in favour of reducing the games from 82

Wouldn't an NIT style tournament for better draft odds during playoffs be better?

1 vs 2 for better pick odds
3 vs 4
5 vs 6
Etc

Winner between those matchups gets the better draft odds. So second best odds can become one. Or six can become fifth best odds. For the higher seeds it is what it is.

This idea gets teams that are out of the playoffs one extra game at least.

They could add bonus odds in a second round and third round to give fans even more games to watch. I'd expect the bonuses to not be great but its better than nothing.

Who's going to watch bad teams play when the playoffs are happening simultaneously.

Do it between Xmas and New Years. Have the whole lottery play a one and done tourney for the next year's #1 pick. Start the season a little earlier so you still get 82 games in for everyone. Anyone who was in the prior year's playoffs get a week off. Xmas Day games are only prior year playoff teams. The tourney starts the next night.

I think two weeks off during the season for teams that played in the playoffs is a good idea. Especially for the 4 conference championship playing teams that play until late May.

Any fan with team in lottery will watch. Also it can be scheduled as early games before a playoff game or weekend matinmee or during the off days. Think football being all day on Saturday for college and Sunday NFL. Could be a real event for basketball fans, an NIT NBA tournament.

Will the Lakers hang banners for winning the FA Cup?  Maybe we can invite G-League and college teams to play for the “championship “.

I think owners and decision makers at the top have to stop thinking that their fan base would like it a whole lot better if their product was like European soccer. They may like the concept, but the fans don't. If they ran a poll I am sure the numbers would be overwhelmingly in the favor of no gimmicky stuff

Yeah, it's just a completely different structure.  And, while the FA Cup may be an old trophy in English Soccer, I'm not sure that many of the top teams covet it very much.  They often send out teams of backups to play in those matches, preferring to keep players fresh for competitions that they do care about.

Admittedly, the Champion's League is very interesting, but there's no real equivalent for that in basketball.  Should we have the winners of the EuroCup, Australian basketball league, Chinese Basketball Association and the NBA square off in a four game tournament?  Lol.
