I have no real problem with calling both Smart and Brogdon combo guards. But, in that case, we just need to acknowledge that probably 25+ teams in the NBA start a combo G at PG. It’s subjective of course, but I’d say there’s only a handful of true, pass-first PG running the show for teams in the NBA:
Chris Paul
Mike Conley
LaMelo Ball
Dejounte Murray
Kyle Lowry
I’d probably consider most of those guys “true” PG. I’d be hard-pressed to call any other starting PG in the NBA anything but a combo G. The position has fundamentally changed.
