This is not one of those trades that is going to be a home run or a strike out.  It is a trade that you hope makes you incrementally better in the short term and that fits in with your long term plan for the team.  It seems to have hit on both of these so it is hard to say it was a bad trade.  Is it a single or a double?  I don't know.

People tend to look at this trade in isolation, White for Richardson, but I don't think that is necessarily looking at the complete picture.  If you think of this more as White replacing Schroder, then you can see better why the team is playing better with White since the trade.  White taking Schroder's role and minutes has made the team better.  Schroder was kind of getting in peoples' way, White has been a catalyst.  Schroder was a "need the ball in my hands" PG, White a versatile combo guard who helps the team in a number of ways, and without needing the ball in his hands.

I like White on the Celtics.  I like that he is locked up on a reasonable contract for several years.  I like that getting White allowed us to trade Schroder (not needing him anymore) for Theis.  These are all connected.

Having Pritchard step up has helped this all work out also.  We are clearly better with White as the back up PG/combo guard.  We are clearly better for having Theis to add to the big depth but we are thinner at back up wing.  Now if Nesmith can step up like Pritchard, he can negate or minimize the wing depth concern, which really has not been that much of an issue anyway.

This trade absolutely was a home run.

Everyone seems to get what was wrong with Schroder so I won't bother with that, but Richardson, while he played well here, did not promote ball movement. He created his own shots.

More importantly, he absorbed minutes at the two, nudging Brown and Tatum up one position bigger for a chunk of minutes. Now they stick to the wings. We play bigger and nastier now, and we get physical defense at the point for almost the whole game.

Stevens promised to prioritize fit around Tatum and Brown. Its not about White, its about fit.

It's not the player. I like White and always have, but still was and am not a fan of the trade it took to get him

Practically speaking it’s Richardson and Schröder for White and Pritchard (and Freedom for Theis).   I like the post-trades Cs on all counts.

No, practically speaking it’s the actual, totally separate trades that occurred. If you wanna make your Pritchard point…. The Cs could have just dumped DS for Theis — just like they actually did.

Ok except that before the trades C's played JRich and Shroeder (not much Freedom)  and after the trade they play White, Pritchard, and Theis. I think "practically speaking" works there, but I don't care.  How's this: they are better since the trades.

And I can tell you why that is. Pritchard is basically a shooting guard in a point guard's body. He can't defend 2's, and he can't be the primary ball handler (yet, at least). That means he could never really play next to Shroeder (also can't guard 2's) and Richardson (also not primary ball handler). However, guess who can be the primary ball handler and guard bigger 1's and 2's? Derrick freaking White. In our new lineup, Pritchard can play with both White and Smart.

We are better with White. Heck, we are elite with White. We needed White, not the 2022 1st, Richardson, and Romeo.

Do you think, practically speaking, Richardson was limiting Pritchard’s playing time? Or his shooting %?

Virtually all who defend the White trade use this Pritchard argument to do so — which I happen to think is ridiculous, but moreover makes clear most understand we overpaid. I also get that most don’t care that we overpaid. Like hey, “the team’s better ao who cares!” That’s fair.

But as for the actual White trade, the idea that his “versatility” (aka he’s not especially good at anything) freed up Pritchard to be a different kind of player is an excuse. The Celtics had a ball dominant, score first combo guard playing ahead of Pritchard. They trade him to HOU which allowed PP — a score first combo guard — to move up into a back-up role.

If the White trade hadn’t happened, Pritchard would be doing the same.

I think we overpaid based upon risk at the time, but there's a solid chance that the trade ends up being White for Richardson + Langford + #25 + no pick swap.

I do agree with the Pritchard stuff.  We could have moved Schroeder without trading Richardson.  That would have opened up minutes for Pritchard all on its own.
