That's correct.  Jalen Green is Houstons first, 1st round pick since Sam  Dekker in 2015. That just blew my mind. IMO that's really irresponsible GM moves over there.

No wonder why they are such a joke right now.

Teams competing for championships often trade the 1st's for immediate veteran help.  Nothing unusual about that at all.  Look at the Cavs, they drafted Wiggins in 2014 (and traded him a month or so later for Love), the next time they drafted someone in the 1st round was Sexton in 2018 and that wasn't even their own pick (that was the Nets pick they got from Boston in the Irving trade).  Garland in 2019 was the first time they used their own 1st round pick since they had drafted Wiggins.  The Lakers haven't drafted a 1st round player since Mo Wagner in 2018.  Teams competing for championships don't have time to develop late 1st round picks (if they develop at all).  They'd much rather get a player that can help them win a title in the present.
2025 Historical Draft - Cleveland Cavaliers - 1st pick

Starters - Luka, JB, Lebron, Wemby, Shaq
Rotation - D. Daniels, Mitchell, G. Wallace, Melo, Noah
Deep Bench - Korver, Turner

can't help but notice your examples involve GM Lebron at the helm when those first rounders were disposed with to grab him some instant help.  really hurt Cleveland when he jumped ship and LA is going to be hurting for a long time thanks to the absence of first round picks to add cheap, cost-controlled talent.

He left the Cavs a mess, The Lakers are a disaster right now.  Not smart to trade all your firsts. The Lakers can only trade their 2027 first lol.

It wasn't an exhaustive list.  But contenders draft in the late 20's.  Rarely are those guys going to do anything anyway and often when they do, they aren't cheap or cost controlled anymore (like Robert Williams).

Heat didn't make a 1st round pick between 2008 and 2015.

Once it's established that you have a Championship contender, you have to add the pieces to continue and reinforce it. Rookies/Sophomores are bench players on playoff teams.

For reference, the best the Warriors could do drafting in the backend since 2013 is Kevon Looney in 2015 and Jordan Poole in 2019, they're part of the rotation after multiple seasons of being non-factors. They drafted 2 players in the lottery in Kuminga and Moody and they're lower on the depth chart than guys like Juan Toscano-Anderson, Damion Lee, and Otto Porter; Wiseman got less minutes than Kevon Looney in a tanking year!
