No one can doubt that the 5 is a weak spot on the current roster.  Some of us think that Danny Ainge has a blind-spot there, while others point to the changing NBA game where the 5 is just not as important as it used to be.  Let's review the last 2 years:

Daniel Theis -  He just wasn't good enough or a strong enough defender.

Robert Williams III - Huge potential but arguably still has a long way to go.

Tacko Fall - sideshow

Tristan Thompson - My ideal 2nd string center

Luke Kornet - My ideal 3rd string center

Grant Williams - specialty small-ball center in limited situations

DA could have gotten Myles Turner but we ended up with Evan Fournier

Al Horford -  IMO, he was ideal for this team and the current NBA style.  A high-post passer with a 3-pt shot and adequate defense.  Is the book closed on him?

I honestly don't know where this thread is heading (that's up to YOU), but since I've been watching the C's since the early 1980's, I see the center position as a real problem.

Al Horford was ideal, but his effectiveness has declined and his contract is monstrous.

It’s hard to see any guy like that around the league. There are plenty with elements of that kind of game (Adebayo, Sabonis, Vucevic, Draymond, Thad Young) but none of those can shoot, defend well and a number of positions and pass all in one package. However, neither could Horford when he was drafted, so who knows.

I’ve been harping on the idea of an upgrade at the C spot for a while. I’ve clamoured for Vucevic and Valanciunas. Plumlee is another guy that’s growing on me. Just need something.

I actually thought Theis was an above average starting center and was ideal for us. I don't know what Ainge was thinking. I would be perfectly happy with him, letting Robert Williams become whatever he might become, and using Kornet as a 3rd string defender. Thompson seems way too uneven to me.

The power forward spot is the gaping hole on this team. Given the salary situation, the only option I think we have is to trade Smart and draft someone and live with that.

I think Rob Williams should be the starter, I just don't trust his ability to be available.   


Thompson is payed to much for what he provides and I think he clogs the offense to much.   Either shoot like Theis or pass like Rob.   


I like Grant Williams as a third small ball C as long as the team has a 4th big man C that can hold his ground defensively.

While he is, the Celtics roster also forces him to play it often as well.   Add a PF that could play starter minutes and still be a plus for the team would be very helpful.
