Kemba as our point guard is not the only issue but definitely is a major one. His injury issues aside, he’s a small lean guy who isn’t a natural facilitator nor vocal leader. Looking at this off-season coincidentally the Knicks have huge cap space and a point guard size hole to fill. Giving the Knicks Kemba + Thompson for a future 1st pick can give the Celtics some cap relief for a major free agent pick up or even a sign and trade using our trade exception.

Sending Kemba home to New York is a great PR move for the Celtics front office and the future pick can help us in other trade negotiations, the only major sticking point is if Thibs wants Kemba given his propensity for defensive skill sets.

Is this salary dump a positive move for the Celtics? Do you need someone coming back in the other direction? Or do you think keeping Kemba is what’s best for Boston?

Prior to the season I really wanted us to try and deal Kemba for Randle (got laughed at a bit around here). Now I think Kemba would have little value for New York, they have an offence that wouldn't suit him IMO

Why for New York?

For me it just makes sense.

- Kemba is from New York.

- I believe the Knicks were Walker’s second choice after Boston during his free agency, so he will be happy to go there as I’m sure will Thompson.

- It will make their agents happy that Ainge didn’t dump their clients into the NBA wilderness.

- It’s will be a good PR move for future free agents.

- The Knicks obviously want to compete and Kemba actually fits there because they will have Barrett and Randle to facilitate and Kemba can be used like Rose has been this season.

- The Knicks have possibly 60 million in cap space this off-season and they should be willing to depart with a pick because they will have a competitive squad.

Don't sign Fournier, don't extend Smart, and when Kemba expires you can sign an max guy. So maybe going another year is the answer if you want salary space.

Only one of those answers “why for New York?”.   Why spend $35+ million when they could just bring back Rose?

Understandable point, throwing in Thompson perhaps helps but for me the cost is the main issue not Rose. D.Rose is pretty washed at this point and if they want to compete Derrick wouldn’t be an option starting. Walker is a huge upgrade for them but you’re right saying the price point is a major issue, if they can’t get a point guard that is as talented as Walker for essentially free, he could be a viable option for New York.

Kemba isn’t off the books till 2023/24, that’s too long for me wasting Brown & Tatum’s prime years under contract. If the Celtics salary dump Walker and Thompson that could open up 21.7 million of cap space immediately, then with Smart’s 13.8…35.5 million could be on offer for free agency.

So you suggest salary dumping Kemba, Thompson and Smart. Then waiving the rights to all the C's free agents(Fournier, Kornet, Ojeleye) to open enough space to offer around $35 a year for who? Did you see who the free agents are this year?

https://www.spotrac.com/nba/free-agents/

Please tell me the guy on that list that the Celtics would have a realistic chance of getting and be worth not bringing back

Kemba
Smart
Thompson
Fournier
Ojeleye
Kornet

What free agent this year is realistic to sign and worth not bringing back all of those guys?

I doubt Thibs wants anything to do with Kemba. Defensive liability.

Kemba only has two more years left, so it's 22-23, not 23-24. I don't really like the idea of trading Kemba as I think he is much better than is given credit for, but I guess I can see the allure of a salary dump to NYK if we are indeed getting at least a pick back. It would definitely make us worse, but it would also allow us to keep Fournier - who will presumably be on a more reasonable contract than Kemba.

More likely, if we are trading Kemba, we will likely be able to take back less salary, but the player(s) we get back won't be nearly as good. I am not sure NYK will want to give up picks to overpay Kemba, but I'm also not sure what their plan is to improve after this season (something they'll desperately want to do). I also think it is wishful thinking you can attach Thompson to the deal.

My apologies, I didn't make myself clear as I meant to say sign & trade for Smart because even with his flaws, is still a valuable asset.

I actually think Kyle Lowry is the perfect short term solution for this team.

Lowry could be signed for a cut price deal and he would suit playing in a Steven's style offence especially next to the Jays. Lowry is defensively rock solid, is a fantastic passer, lacks ego and will offer much needed veteran leadership.

If Lowry goes anywhere for a cut price deal, it would be the Sixers since he's from north Philly.

Almost a 0% chance of Lowry going to 76ers, they will be 17 Million over the cap before resigning any of their upcoming free agents. Celtics could be a perfect last crack at winning another title and like you said he's from Philly so it's only a drive away from Boston.

In saying all that, it's more likely the Miami Heat signs him after declining Dragic & Iguodala's team options.
