With these 2 quotes in mind, I fully believe CBS wants to start 1 big, 3 (s)wings and 1 ball handler. Alternatively, 1 big, 2 (s)wings and 2 ball handlers.

Ball handler: Kemba
Wing: Brown
Swing: Barnes (?)
Swing: Tatum
Big: Theis / Thompson / Timelord

Why is Barnes a swing but Jaylen a wing?

I don't see Barnes as being any better at covering big forwards defensively or at covering the backboards.
Tomayto, tomahto. The important thing is that all 3 of them are switchable defenders. Fwiw, Tatum and Barnes are 2 inches taller than Brown. Per cleaning the glass, Brown has played only 4% of his minutes at PF this season (and 4% last season as well). I already posted the respective numbers for Barnes and Tatum.

If you ask me, Brown is a wing. He relies more on explosiveness rather than on strength (unlike for instance guys like Semi or Crowder).

I'm a big defensive first guy. However what we've seen so far this season it shows that Smart/Brown/Tatum + 2 bigs isn't working. On paper it should be elite defensively but in reality it isn't. And on the offensive end we definitely miss dynamic and playmaking. When Walker is inserted we get the dynamic, but not the necessary playmaking.

I believe stop playing two bigs, give Robert Williams more time and add depth can fix a lot of the defensive issues and the lack of shooting. What we need to obtain is a player who can be a real difference maker as a playmaker.
Ideally that would be a proven youngish player like Fox, Morant, SGA or even LaMelo Ball or Haliburton.
I'd imagine there's no reasonable option to get one of them, even if we tried hard, which I hope we do.

In the next tier we have guys like Lonzo Ball and Garland. The issue I have with Lonzo is whether he's enough of a scoring threat to run your offense through and Garland is a bad defender, with questionable upside on that end.

I think I wouldn't mind if we went after Lonzo Ball. If we take age out as a primary factor, then a name pops up who hasn't been mentioned a lot lately, but could be a surprisingly good fit: DeMar DeRozan.

We'd need to trade Walker (possibly to Orlando or New York) as is suggested in this thread. We then can still add depth with the TPE. A starting unit of DeRozan/Brown/Fournier???/Tatum/R.Williams + Smart as 6th man looks quite interesting.

DeRozan is 31, but is quietly having a very strong season. He averages 20/5/7 on .60 TS%, 4.4 AS/TO, just 23.9 usage and .20 WS/48. That is very impressive.

Nobody thinks that DeRozan could be a short term answer to our problems?

If you ask me, Brown is a wing. He relies more on explosiveness rather than on strength (unlike for instance guys like Semi or Crowder).

It mattes because the designation doesn't give proper credit to Jaylen Brown for his versatility. He is a three position player - SG, SF and PF.

It matters because by failing to credit Jaylen for his capacity to play PF it in turn overstates H.Barnes' ability to play PF. Yes, Barnes can play there but he is not great there either. He offers no more defensive or rebounding capacity to matchup against bigger PFs than Jaylen does.

The truth is that Tatum is still the one best suited to playing PF on the team even if Barnes is acquired. Tatum is a much better rebounder, team defender and he is bigger with more length which helps him in one-on-ones.

That the trio of Barnes, Tatum and Jaylen can work together is a testament to Jaylen's versatility. He is the one that makes it work. He is the only one who can play SG full time. He is the three position player. He is the one that is versatile enough to make this trio able to play together.

To call Barnes a swing but Jaylen not is to say that Barnes can do something that Jaylen cannot which Barnes cannot do. It is wrong and it does not give Jaylen the due he deserves.
