What is the point of this for either side? Especially after he asked to be traded...

Bird rights.  Virtually no one has cap space this summer — if Thompson wants to get something more than the MLE, he’ll need it to happen via sign-and-trade.  This would also allow the Cavs to get something for him.

Isn't having him, Nance, Love and Drummond rotating and expecting minutes a problem?

Sure, if you’re trying to win.

Love is  a full time PF and Nance is his back-up.  Nance also backs up Thompson at C (along with Zizic), those minutes are likely gone, but the real issue is Drummond and Thompson both at C.  Though maybe they work it out so they both play around 24 minutes and both can go full bore more of the time on the court.

When they acquired Drummond I'm really surprised they didn't already have a deal in place for Thompson.  Just a weird acquisition without the follow-up.  Though as I've been saying since this thread started, the Cavs do really like Thompson.  I think them getting Drummond was in reaction to Thompson saying he didn't want to be there anymore.  Maybe they still get Drummond since he was so cheap, but without the Thompson trade demand I'm not so sure the Cavs even kick the tires on Drummond.
2023 Historical Draft - Brooklyn Nets - 9th pick

Bigs - Pau, Amar'e, Issel, McGinnis, Roundfield
Wings - Dantley, Bowen, J. Jackson
Guards - Cheeks, Petrovic, Buse, Rip

I believe he is a good teammate and all, but I don't think you want to have two guys about to enter free agency that view themselves as starters being limited to 24 minutes each (especially on a team losing every night). It seems like they have really set themselves up for locker room issues, especially given it seems the players already don't love the coach. Plus if Love already threw his temper tantrums prior to the trade deadline and then apologized saying he would behave even if he was there for "5 more weeks or 5 more months." Well now he is locked in for more the rest of the season with no hope of a move....
