Grant Williams.  By the New Year he will be one of the top two bigs in the rotation.

I always appreciate a bold prediction, and I’m with you on one thing at least: I’m bullish on Grant Williams.

Leaving aside the question of whether Grant is a big at all, to do what you predict he would have to pass up both Robert Williams and Daniel Theis - or are you saying that he’ll pass up Kanter?!

And not only that, but you are predicting that this will happen by New Year’s! (I doubt it.)

If there is one takeaway from the first game, it’s that Boston badly needs rim protection. And, while I assume that you would agree with me that Grant Williams has terrific potential as a team defender, there are other players on the roster with a greater ability or upside to protect the rim.

I think he’ll get more minutes than two of the three on most nights, yes.  He will get more of his minutes at the 4 than the 5, presumably, so it’s up to you if that means he’s passed two of them or is getting more due to changes in rotations.

Last night did little to change my opinion about Grant.

He’s starting out with a bang, that’s for sure. He’s the most NBA-ready of the rookies, by a mile, and even more so than Timelord (who, like Grant, is already getting rotation minutes).

He might not have planned to play 5, but when he was called on to do it, apparently he had already studied the plays for that role! And he came through, too.

As for your bold prediction, tbd. Let’s check back in January.
'I was proud of Marcus Smart. He did a great job of keeping us together. He might not get credit for this game, but the pace that he played at, and his playcalling, some of the plays that he called were great. We obviously have to rely on him, so I’m definitely looking forward to Marcus leading this team in that role.' - Jaylen Brown, January 2021
