Title: How do you spend your time waiting for this Celtics Blog site to load?
Post by: Alleyoopster on April 02, 2018, 11:54:17 PM
Sometimes waiting for this site to load can get frustrating. Now's the time to express how you feel.

Perhaps, in the future, we should conduct another poll predicting the year when this site will load quickly.

Fortunately, I have 43 other tabs on my Chrome opened besides Celtics Blog. I also have my mobile device to surf on IG/Twitter/Snapchat and those typical young-generation apps that those young peeps like me use.

Once that loading symbol is complete for Celtics Blog...I'll just be like "ah, finally. Let's see which poster/thread is getting roasted, any new interesting topics, or should I post something to make something look questionably sarcastic or serious and drive readers nuts."  ;D 8)

Of course, only when I am not working.

Been a problem for quite a while.

Check out this ongoing thread.

I didn’t vote as I don’t wait any longer.

I’ve been posting and reading a lot on RealGM Celtics and the Celtics reddit 17 and counting sites.

I don't wait.

If it takes more than 10 or 15 seconds for a page to load I simply close the tab I have the forums open in and go to a different website.

I love this community, but I'm seriously tired of the connectivity issues here.  There's no legitimate excuse why Vox Media hasn't permanently fixed this problem yet. It's clear to me they don't really view the forums as much of a priority.

Cursing Jeff and Vox for ignoring their community. Seriously this is something a half cooked dev could fix in less than an hour.

Want to make it worth your time put a couple ads on the forums. I'll happily look at a Sullivans Tire or Arbella Insurance ad if these forums loaded even half the time!

End rant :)

I think they’d admit as much: we’re unique, in a network of sites that follow a template. The few other SBN blogs that had a forum - such as Nets Daily - have shut down their forums.  We cost them money (server, independent contractors to handle maintenance, etc.) without bringing in revenue.

I’m not sure what the solution is, but it won’t be the status quo.

I'm with the poster above who said he would not mind seeing ads if that's what it took to cost-justify improvements to the site. The forum keeps people coming back to this site; is the concept of synergy really that hard for them to understand?

No lie, I usually hit the link, and then flip to another tab for 30 seconds to a minute, then come back. 50% of the time it works every time.

Put ads on this site and help pay for better performance.  I totally agree with this.

I do not know too many sites that don't do this. Even SonsofSamHorn added an amazon link so they could help pay for things.

I would rather not lose the ability to post here and die waiting for a page to load. Put Ads on this site!

I'm missing, "I go warm up some soup, toast a couple of slices of bread, eat all that and steep a cup of strong black tea in order to have a nice lukewarm drink by the time CB loads up". Sounds like my option.

It's hilarious that he made such a big deal about not posting here anymore, supposedly his choice, because it wasn't worth the effort and he didn't want to get caught up posting online anymore yadda yadda, and there he is on Reddit posting just as frequently as he ever did on here.

By and large, the connection problems are a deal breaker when they're on; the site is not simply slow (at least to me), it's completely unusable. And yes, some of the new kids need a couple of years of seasoning before they know what they're talking about. We've all been there :P

I miss that goofy guy. It seemed like he was looking at a red sky when many others saw blue, but he was original. Gotta give him that.

I find it interesting that he has left the site the moment the 76ers got good. You would think he would like to gloat after all of his hard work promoting that franchise.

Re: the site being slow- yes, its annoying. I think it is more indicative of how nerdy we are. Getting frustrated about not being able to communicate with strangers online is about as dorky as it gets. Kevin Durant dismisses us (and namely the national writers with hot takes) as "blog boys", which I think is hilarious. Seeing grown as* men get upset about this issue is like a Dungeons and Dragons fan being upset that he can't host his 40 year old friends in his basement b/c Mom is having her church friends over.

But seriously [dang it]! Get this thing working!  :P

Run a search for all of larbrd33 posts, delete them and all speed connections issues are solved.
We’re probably talking about several Tera bites of data .

I’m not sure what the solution is, but it won’t be the status quo.

And to be clear, I'm well aware this is obviously about money.  And noted a while back this was likely the case.

As I said in the Cavs game thread, I'm inclined to believe Vox Media (the parent company of SB Nation) simply does not care and is unwilling to invest any resources in fixing the problem.

If you notice, there are no advertisements in the forums here, only on the front page of CelticsBlog.  My guess is that has a lot to do with it.  I wouldn't be surprised if Vox Media actually wants everyone to shift to the front page, and would rather just phase out the forums.

Maybe they do "care", though, as "care" is a relative term here.  But if the forums aren't making them money, they're definitely not going to be willing to invest resources.  This is strictly a business decision.

What they plan on doing is anyone's guess, but, as I noted back in February, I wouldn't be surprised if they are considering shuttering the forums.  It seems like it either that, or put up ads.  But someone has to be willing to advertise on the forums, and I don't have the slightest clue what the data says about the profitability of that.

Would it ever be possible to separate the forum from the SB Nation site?  I.e. Export all the forum data and port it over to a freestanding forum site?  That might require a bit of capital to do.  I for one wouldn't mind a one time shared fee for all of us to allow the forum to be disconnected from SB nation.  Say if we all had to pay a one time fee of $40 to pay for the migration of the forum is that just a non-starter?

This is one of my fav sites on the net, but if we all have continual issues with access then don't we need to look at other options?

I 'kinda' like the idea. Maybe it would be easier if we continued on CB and they made it a paying site with a lesser fee....say $10. If there was enough interest I don't think it would cost that much to speed up service.

Sadly, there may be a “save the forums” drive coming soon.

There will be more details to come, but long-term we have three options:

1. Take the forums independent;

2. Latch on to another blog;

3. Close down.

I really would hate to see #3. It’s like hearing that your favorite pub is being torn down and replaced by Applebee’s.

Yeah it was a complete swag saying $40, who knows the costs?  there might be a lot of people who might not be able to afford an ongoing pay site.  that is why I was suggesting a fee for a one time transfer of the site to a new domain / host.  I am not a web forum / data expert but I am sure there are some here.

I thought the SBNation transfer way back when was conditional on preserving the forums. I guess the plan was all along to just keep it alive while there was enough critical mass to keep the blog alive without the forum...

Option 3 will be really unfortunate. Where else am I going to find such a large group of people willing  to put up with my garbage?

More or less what I've suspected for a while now.

Hopefully it's not #3.  That would be truly unfortunate.

Yeah, I'm guessing the front page of CB has enough unique members now that Vox Media no longer feels compelled to keep the forums alive.  Even if they alienated every forum user, and we all boycotted the front page, I'm guessing it wouldn't hurt them in the least.

And you know, kudos to Jeff Clark for taking an idea and building it into what he did.  He should be proud.  But it's still going to be sad to see the forums no longer a part of that.

They better not do away with the forums, as they are, unquestionably, the best part of this site. Seriously, I never even go to the front page, I just come straight here. More to the point, if this does get removed, what happens to my Tommy Points - you know, the only reason for my continued existence ;) ;D? Sigh. Should we all just exchange contact information or something? I love this place. Please don't make me go to Reddit, lol ;D.

"Bathroom Break" needs to be added as an option to this pole, lol ;D.

That said, and despite the fact that it had been pretty slow over the last two days, the speed seems to be back to normal since the creation of this thread. Hmm...

Honestly, though, guys, if we're going to even try to implement any kind of a boycott with respect to the front page, just bookmark the forums on your browser as opposed to entering the, well, forums via the front page. I've been doing that for years, now, and maybe if we're all in lockstep, here, SB Nation would at least notice that a significant number of users, and the most senior ones, at that, are bypassing the front page altogether in favor of the forums, but I doubt that that makes a difference. Thoughts?

Besides, if this place goes :'(, how am I going to oblige Tarheels' request for self Tommy Pointification ;D even though I have yet to do so, lol ;D.

Well that's bad news.  Maybe start a GoFundMe for C'sBlog?  Although I don't see anyone voluntarily dishing out money when they can simply go somewhere else for free such as real GM, or post via FaceBook on the site's articles.

I myself just registered for a real GM account.  The connectivity issues here are just too much.

This is one of my fav sites on the net, but if we all have continual issues with access then don't we need to look at other options?

Sadly, there may be a “save the forums” drive coming soon.

There will be more details to come, but long-term we have three options:

1. Take the forums independent;

2. Latch on to another blog;

3. Close down.

I really would hate to see #3. It’s like hearing that your favorite pub is being torn down and replaced by Applebee’s.

Out of curiosity, would option #1 lead to a migration to a new server provider/software?

I really enjoy and appreciate this forum as a place to discuss the NBA and the Celtics in particular; but the limitations and formatting of the core forum software make it rather difficult to be much more than a casual lurker here.  I'm not sure if this is a Vox thing because I don't use any of their other sites, but I'd gladly pitch in some change if it led to becoming an indy community running on a smoother interface like Invision Community.

I don’t know.  I’m open to ideas.

Internally, there was discussion years ago about moving to new software, but there was resistance because things like username, post count, TPs, etc. weren’t transferable.

Put ads on this site and help pay for better performance.  I totally agree with this.

I do not know too many sites that don't do this. Even SonsofSamHorn added an amazon link so they could help pay for things.

I would rather not lose the ability to post here and die waiting for a page to load. Put Ads on this site!

this site needs to become a pay site or accept donations. simple fix.

Oh, I suppose that makes sense; I've heard of boards switching out software but it probably happened earlier in their histories when those things were of less consequence.

Count me as one who would gladly give up all TPs and post numbers to have a readily accessible site.

Post counts are definitely overrated. Having a billion posts doesn't confer on you or imply any special knowledge, insight or even experience per se.

In fact, the stars are fun but not essential to the site experience for me.

And TPs?, really are fun and people (I'm speaking for myself) have fun garnering them and wagering them, but their value is less than they once were. Here's one reason why:

As an aside, one way to give someone multiple TPs at once (before the karma notice kicks in) is to to keep hitting the "giveth one" button multiple times when the site is loading up, and until it loads, it
keeps registering TPs. My ADD "helped" me discover that. Needless to say, the patience required  to wait for this site to load sometime and my ADD are not real compatible. Haha.

Yeah, I'm guessing the front page of CB has enough unique members now that Vox Media no longer feels compelled to keep the forums alive.  Even if they alienated every forum user, and we all boycotted the front page, I'm guessing it wouldn't hurt them in the least.
Pfff, I haven't really been on the front page in months. It's poorly organized, full of syndicated national content and has a ton of articles by people I don't know. That's no longer a blog, it's a media outlet -- and not a very good one at that.

In general, it seems that over the past decade or so blogging has transformed from a platform for enlightened fans into a refuge of lazy journalism. I miss the time when I could read Jeff and Roy's thoughts on how Al Jefferson and Kendrick Perkins are putting it all together... but just like my 20s that isn't coming back :P

Sometimes waiting for this site to load can get frustrating. Now's the time to express how you feel.

Perhaps, in the future, we should conduct another poll predicting the year when this site will load quickly.

Hilarious poll. TP

The question we should really be asking:

We all spend a lot of time on this great site. Would donations help buy servers/upgrades to make the site smoother and faster?

Cause something is wrong technically.

I'm down to donate if need be. I vote with my dollars and this site gets my vote.

To the contrary...noticed there are a lot more postings when the team is doing lousy. We love to complain.  And when things go bad, each of us knows where the problems lie and how to solve them.

I actually ran 'celtics blog forum connection problems' through a search engine in the hope of finding more about the issue, but actually found a reddit forum in which Larbrd33 was trashing this site and saying how "we don't know what we are talking about" hahaha

It's hilarious that he made such a big deal about not posting here anymore, supposedly his choice, because it wasn't worth the effort and he didn't want to get caught up posting online anymore yadda yadda, and there he is on Reddit posting just as frequently as he ever did on here.

Well, most of his strange arguments (Sixers prospects not losing any value / having huge trade value, Jaylen being a “tier 3 prospect”, and many more) had blown up in his face by the time he left.

I just figured he decided to fade into Bolivian instead of face the music about how wrong he was, and by fade into Bolivian I mean get a fresh start with an audience that has no recollection of any of it.

Ditto here. I'm a software engineer by trade/ technology VP these days. I'm happy to contribute time getting something going.

I also have a side company that could potentially host the system on our servers. I don't have a great idea of the actual costs, but done right it could probably run on donations/ small sponsors.

Should we start a group chat/ Slack/ something to discuss this somewhere among admins and people able to help?
