Title: Who do you want the Celtics to avoid for the 2018 draft?
Post by: triboy16f on January 03, 2018, 04:29:10 PM
My list

-Doncic

He is slow and can't get by a semi decent defender.   He will have issues at the nba level, there is no way around it

- Bagley Jr.

Thin lower body, poor rim protector, inconsistent shooter,  projects passes.  Doesn't have crafty/skills to make things look easy.  Good athlete but nothing special.  I do like his work ethic and has a good upper body,..... but overall is raw

- Miles Bridges

Short pf that is a tweener not in a good way on the defensive end.

- Grayson Allen

Poor defender that can't keep up.

Of the ďtop fiveĒ, Iím a bit skeptical of Doncic and Bamba, which probably means those will be the two best players in the draft.

Bamba. Measurables are great but, I don't know, he just looks like he'll need lots of years to develop and I think he has the highest chance of never reaching his full potential.

I love Doncic. Think he has sneaky athleticism. Probably will nevrr be a great defender but his offensive potential is off the boards.

Iím not even sure Bagley has a good upper body.  Doesnít seem to have wide shoulders, but what he does have going for him is very quick off his feet, agile, a great motor, and seems to play with great intensity.

Iíve heard a few people mention Ayton has a so so basketball IQ so I worry about that.

Agree with you about both, although Iíd also say that Doncic could probably be a plus defender (although ďgreatĒ is a poorly defined term).  So much of playing good NBA defense is just about being in the right place and competing on that end.  His court vision and BBIQ are very high, and he seems to have that compete-every-play mentality.  Combine that with good size for a wing, and while he might not wind up being an All-NBA defender, he wonít often be the weak link on a defense.  Heís an excellent defensive rebounder too, which certainly helps.

Ainge said that Tatum wasnít a great athlete, but he certainly seems athletic enough for the NBA.  I think Doncic is similar on the athleticism scale.

Yeah, that's a crazy take.

This is him at 17 years of age. vs OKC and Westbrook. Again, he was 17 in the video!! The kid arguably has the highest floor in the draft and his ceiling is sky high too.

I think it's still too early to decide on these guys. My favorite player so far has to be Doncic. He's the one I've watched the most going against high level competition.

I wouldn't want to draft Trae Young.  Not interested in a guy who has almost no projection on one end of the court.  He may very well become a good player, but it won't hurt my feelings if it happens somewhere else.  Let somebody else take that risk.

Ayton is my favorite from this draft.  Bagley is a close second - I think he's more of a project than people let on especially on the defensive end, but the talent is terrific.  I have concerns about the other three - Doncic, Bamba, Porter - but would be happy to draft any of them.

That's fair.  I've only seen a little of Doncic.

I kind of see him as similar to Lonzo Ball but without a broken shot.  Is that at all accurate?

I've watched quite a few games of his, but I'm far from an expert.

In my opinion, his offensive game is hard to compare to people. He's a lot bigger than Lonzo (6'8"/6'9" vs 6'6"), and Doncic uses his size very well. His defensive versatility is really impressive, as he guards 2-4's quite solidly for the most part.
I guess his offensive game is similar to Harden's to a degree. Really strong at the hoop, really good free throw shooter and can shoot from anywhere. Supports his versatile arsenal with really impressive playmaking and rebounding.

Also doesn't quit on defence like Harden - has a fiery edge to him which always appeals to me

Avoid drafting a ball-handler and a wing.

Draft a big.

Yeah, pre-draft I thought Fultz could've been like a smaller lesser playmaking Harden. Oops ;D

We only pick #2-5, and I'd definitely draft Ayton, Bagley, Doncic.

I might avoid picking Porter due to medicals or what I think of Bamba after workouts.

I might avoid picking Trae Young because if Porter looks great, and Bamba looks good, the 4 guys I want in that range might be set.  I need a Tatum 2.0 or a center with DPOY upside more than a bench pg.  Tho I'll admit I haven't seen a full game of his.

WOW, dont like Bagley? Safest pick in the draft. Has amazing hands, catches everything. Duke player that would make three on the Celtics. Perfect Horford replacement in two years.

I feel the same, I think the hype is better than the player.  One thing I like about Ainge is that he does not always fall for the Euro hype that other teams fall prey too.  I think he can play in the league, I just don't see a burgeoning star that others do.

I wonder if I searched back threads if the same guys who like Luka liked Bender, Hezonja and Darko?

Those guys were all drafted on potential.  Doncic is lighting it up at 18 against the toughest competition in Europe.  I'd still take Bagley or Ayton ahead of him, but he's a [dang] good 3rd pick.

If I were going to pick one guy to avoid, right now it would be Bamba, as I think he has the highest bust potential.  Great ceiling though.

Bamba has a high floor

While raw his length , mobility is elite. He also has the work ethic and good instincts. Just raw and needs to work on his body

Lighting up against who? Evan Fourniers or class B nba has beens?

European level competition is much like the ncaas div 1... Its not close to nba competition

Unless its Dirk...and you can see such talent miles away

Doncic is not that. Im not saying he will be a bust just not top 3 worthy pick

You wouldnít find me shilling for Darko, because that was before my CB days.  I donít think I hated Hezonja, but of players who went 6-10, I know youíd find posts from me advocating Winslow and Cauley-Stein much more.  I liked Bender a lot, but said Iíd only pick him at #3 on the condition he stayed in Europe for 1-2 more seasons because he wasnít physically ready for the NBA, and Brown was my preferred pick over Murray, ultimately.

You would find posts for me wanting Porzingis, Giannis, and Saric, so my Euroscouting isnít terrible.

The thing with Doncic that makes him both better and more scoutable is that unlike other Euro prospects, he actually plays with the adults.  Heíll have two full years as a top player in Euroleague, so we know what he can do against much better competition (be dominant).  While his fellow draft classmates were participating in junior international tournaments last year, he was helping to lead his country to their first ever Eurobasket championship.  We could watch him go for 27-9 against a Latvia team led by Porzingis.  We could watch him be the best player on the court going for 11, 12, and 8 against a Spain team with both Gasols and Rubio.  Weíve seen him on the court against not just fringe NBA players, but top-tier NBA players, and he hasnít looked the slightest bit out of place.  At 18.

And the key thing that I said above is ďwe have seenĒ it.  Itís not just highlight videos.  All of his games are broadcast live on the internet.  Many of the people on this board who are excited about Doncic arenít going just off stats and highlights, but off of watching complete games.  Iíve watched about 10 myself.  I was high in Giannis, but it was off some YouTube videos, scouting reports, and his freakish measurements.  I was right to like him, but there was a lot of luck involved in being correct on that.  Many of us have seen more of Doncic than we have any other top player in this draft, because there are more games to have seen.

I have to admit, I really loved Hezonja. Definitely got drawn in by the hype. Never liked Bender, though.

I'm officially on record as I don't even know what to make of Doncic. There's just been so much hype, I'm finding it hard to separate the hype from reality. I really miss DraftExpress.

At least you didn't think Fultz would be the next Kyrie.  I was high on Jackson and Ball, and meh on Tatum.

I thought Fultz would become even better than Kyrie. The tools to be the perfect PG. Ńnd I thought Tatum would probably be too slow to play SF and therefore I disliked him (just as much I disliked Jackson for his shooting inability). Ńnd I thought Brown would be a bust. Seemed way too raw and a very bad shooter.

If I had made the decisions the Celtics would have Bender and Fultz on the team.

So I'll say absolutely nothing. (though I do like Bamba  ;))

So stay away from Bamba?  ;)

It all depends on a ton a factors we don't know. I like Bagley a lot. He's not a rim protector, but he is a good position defender.

I'm worried Ayton will be kinda' like Andre Drummond -- a solid starting center who is constantly flashing potential but never delivering. The problem is that Drummond was a much better defender in college than Ayton.

I know some people like to say Porter Jr is kind of like a taller Tatum. But he doesnít seem as fluid an athlete as Tatum.  Seems more rigid and upright and maybe a bit soft too.  Of course Iím just going off of YouTube clips then comparing to what I see of Tatum.  Plus a serious injury already kind of scares me off.

As I have said earlier Doncic scares me because of the hype.  Bagley scares me because he could be Okafor 2.0.  Bamba scares me because he is too skinny.   I am for trading the pick for a veteran right now.

Bagley seems like a better rebounder, shooter, passer, defender, and plays with greater intensity than Okafor.  Iíve only seen a handful of games from him though but thatís what I see.  Okafor is probably the better post scorer, but Bagley is so quick off his feet. A little KG like in that manner. Bagley seems pretty slender though and doesnít seem to have wide shoulders to help put on weight, where Okafor could probably lose a few pounds.

As far as players in a similar mold who I've liked, my record is pretty so so, or maybe poor considering its the lottery where it hurts more to miss.

I badly wanted Kidd-Gilchrist, Smart, Oladipo, Winslow, Dunn and Josh Jackson.  Oladipo, Smart and Dunn look like solid choices though I'm thrilled with Brown.  Josh Jackson has time to prove me a little less wrong but at this point it's hard to imagine him ever catching up to or surpassing Tatum (thrilled with Tatum too).  50 50 in the lottery is not so good.

This year I'll break my type preference and say that Doncic will be a superb pick (sign a center)
and be a 6th man of the year Celtic for years to come.

AVOID: Bamba (my usual type center wise).

CHANGED MY MIND!

Avoid Doncic.  This team has enough ball handlers (Irving Hayward).  Draft one of Ayton, Bagley or Bamba...not sure what order.

Don't get me wrong, I am perfectly happy with Brown, but I knew Kris Dunn was going to be a good player - it was just a matter of time. He still has things he needs to work on, but he is at least proving all of his 'haters' wrong. People who liked Dunn last year now look a lot less foolish.

I haven't seen enough of the upcoming prospects to make an informed decision, but of the top 5, I am most unsure of Bamba (has Trae Young overtaken him yet?)
