The next step is to beat out Erden for the starting job.
Not that easy conaidering he is a veteran player and a Turk, but thats the next thing.
Go Ante go!
SIGN ANTE TOMIC!Ante is a skilled post passer and is a good Euro level PNR finisher but soft and has poor balance. He was NBA material 5+ years ago.
Im just rooting hard for him. My boy.The next step is to beat out Erden for the starting job.

Erden has been a Turkish League All-Star 3 of the last 4 seasons. I'm not going to be disappointed in Zizic if that doesn't happen (and I frankly don't expect it has a chance to happen.)

I do believe that his skillset is sort of plug and play. Rebounding very often translates well. Especialy if a guy has good lenght, which he has with 7'3" wingspan. And his next best skill is finishing around the rim as a roller or on putbacks. Thats also easily translatable imo.
Zizic was the 23rd pick in a ****ty draft. His value is that of perhaps a late first rounder
Brooklyn 17 and 18? Absurd.
A general Zizic value question:Ask yourself one question. Would you rather give up a Brooklyn pick (say 2017) or zizic? If that's easy for you to answer, then that will you will have your answer on relative value.
Zizic is a 19 year-old #23 pick in last year's draft who's already dominated in his first Euro stint this year (about to see soon if he can be effective with his new club). Is it safe to assume that Zizic would be a lottery pick in this year's draft -- even with the strength of this draft a lot higher than last year's?
If so, why do trade proposals here never include Zizic? I realize that everyone likes him and thinks/hopes he could be the center of the future here, but isn't his worth equivalent to the Brooklyn '17 and '18 picks? Or maybe even more valuable than Nets picks given his performance against professionals in Europe (probably needless to say -- I know nothing about the comparative strength of the league he just succeeded in to NCAA Division 1)?
If Zizic's value right now is actually equivalent to the Brooklyn picks, why aren't we talking about Zizic, Brooklyn '18, AJ, (one of) AB/Smart/Crowder, and Brown for Cousins (for example)? I don't really care about Cousins -- the point I am making is, why is Zizic almost never calculated in the trade asset equation in trade ideas here? If I am off on this, please explain why either of the Brooklyn picks are more valuable than Zizic?

Yeah thats the way I see it too. He's shown some good signs in weak leagues, and he did ok tonight, but as we said, Semih Erden is an all-star in that league and Zizic is his backup. I'm optimistic he will be a useful young big man who can do one thing very well that we need, rebounding, but he is nowhere near as valuable as a Nets pick this year or next, especially not this year in such a deep draft at the top.

So -- I was asking a question out of ignorance, so of course there is the possibility of it being absurd. I wasn't saying that I know Zizic to be equivalent to a Brooklyn pick, but was just wondering if perhaps he is, and if not, why not. There is a group of freshmen in college that people are drooling over in 2017 and a group of promising seniors in high school people are hopeful for in 2018. So just wonder where does a strong, active 19yo with a long wing-span who averaged 20/10 in Europe stands in comparison to these freshmen in college and seniors in HS? You both think it's an absurd comparison -- I believe you because I assume you know more than I do about this. With that said, I suspect there's a decent chance that a 30 yo Semih Erden would be doing quite well as a Division 1 NCAA center right now.
Guys, that stat line is NOT for Ante Zizic.
It's for a player on the other team (FC Barcelona Lassa) by the name of Ante Tomic.
Darussafaka were playing FC Barcelona Lassa.
Zizic actually had 4 points on 2/4 shooting and 6 rebounds in 16 minutes of action.
In just about 16 1/2 minutes he tied for tops on the team in rebounds. The guy he tied with played 33 1/2 minutes. That is a great sign. Add his two steels and two blocks and he is looking like the defensive presence we need. I'm highly optimistic but I'm still all in for a trade for any one of the centers we're rumored to be interested in, just no Brooklyn picks please.
Semi erden had a couple good games for us back in the day. Then doc just benched him for no apparent reason. Hoping zizic doesn't get the same treatment.
I keep watching these Zizic vids whenever they are posted, but all I see is a guy who is physically dominant in his league and can operate within 5 feet of the rim. Not saying he won't be good, maybe a Mosgov or Gortat type of big man.

I think a lot of people would love a Gortat on this team. Hence the excitement.
A Luke Harangody sighting!

I think Gortat is his ceiling. Maybe a bit lower but i am certain he can give a nice production coming from the bench. Having said that i don"t see him being a solution to the Cs problems. I think it was a smart move to go play in Turkey. Much stronger league. Now his stats will have some true meaning
BTW the first page of the thread is pretty funny. And disturbing at the same time. How can people have so strong opinions about things they have absolutely no clue ?

Well, it is hard to tell for any prospect will he reach his ceiling or not, especially at his age. However, I live in Zagreb and I saw him play at least 40 games, some live. I also have some insight of how his brother approaches his mentoring. I value that, Andrija has a good track dating his playing days. I think Turkish league is stronger than ABA, but the difference is not that huge IMO.
I think that Gortat is a fairly adequate comparison. Some things he will do better. I even believe his mental make-up is better.
He has more fight to him and I imagine he would be even stronger in his core and hips. Steven Adams mold is accurate too.
I am not saying that my opinion is worth in gold but however it plays out I will try to root for any Celtic to succeed.

Accuracy is fine though, his FTs show that.
His release is really slow (not Amir like but very slow, he won't get that shot of in the NBA unless he improves to 3pt range (slim chance) or gets left wide open (hard to expect that cause at the elbow, 15 feet from the basket is close to almost all defenders)
He knows what he does well and he wastes no time doing it.
If we are expecting some pump fake drive game, we will grow beards waiting for it.
How is he defending the pick and roll? Is he able to contain a ball handler on the perimeter or is he more of a drop down pick and roll defender? His midrange game is not good, a young center like. Thanks for the info, andro. How is his passing?
So Zizic played his first game for David Blatt and Darussafaka tonight. I didnt watch but the line seems alright.

He's playing against guys who are borderline NBA players now, most with a significant edge in age and experience. If he looks good against those guys I think that is a really good sign, given that he just turned 20 yesterday.

Today Darüşşafaka Doğuş beat Büyükçekmece 97-75. Büyükçekmece is at 10th place out of 16 teams in Turkish League.
Zizic played with 14 points, 6 rebounds, 2 blocks in the first half. He finished with 16p/8r/3b in 27 minutes. He shot 5/7 from 2P, and 6/6 from the line.
I've said this several times, but worth repeating: He plays a lot like a young Perk, only a better shooter, especially at the foul line. Both have long arms, low post game, similar gate, and not much lift, but great at boxing out and positioning for rebounds.
Zizic made a jump shot, and folks lost their collective minds. Reminds me of that one time when they put stills of Brady and Tebow's throwing motion on TV to show that "look, they are exactly like mirror images of each other". ::)zizic highlites up -wow, even a 15 footer-google zizic euro league-

It's good, and his free throw percentage is good too. I have hopes that he could be a good mid-range shooter in the next couple years. By his mid-twenties, maybe he could even add range out to the 3.

You think "he might get Zeller's minutes" is "losing our minds"? Or "trending up"? Or "good to see him succeeding in a decent league"? Or "hopes that he could be a good mid-range shooter"?I think "can he be like Al Horford" and "three-point shooter by his mid-twenties" is losing one's mind.

This I agree with. I think hoping that Zizic becomes a slightly better version of a pre-ACL tear Perkins is what we can reasonably hope for.
If he can do this at Euroleague/Turkish League level it's hard to see him not being able to at least take over Zeller's minutes next year.

these eastern european kids are tough cookies not aau pampered but to throw him into nba would be a free pass to foul line-why do we feel that rushing prospects is the right way
jaylen learned something from johnson -get in weight room
that center position is critical to a defensive sets-a rookie has so much to learn both offensively and defensively and then the travel number of games and back to backs-porzingis did it so it is possible but ny had melo and did not make the playoffs
from the two mid range shots i have seen him take his form was very good and his foul shooting , he takes his time, very disciplined and has nice touch-lopez is now knocking down threes at a high rate-the coaches don't have these bigs shooting threes when there scoring at 60% in close-
horford and lopez cab re invent theselves and lengthen their career instead of banging down low- leave it to the" little guy"

Maybe the hype is real. I hope he doesnt get traded, he was one of my picks with the final first rounder.
Well, we are talking about a guy who hasn't even proven he's an NBA player, so there's that...
Yes, but here’s what we do know.
He wasn’t supposed to get many minutes behind Semih Erden.
Vitaly is Eastern European... what do you mean "not smoke and drink"? ;)This was more for the "look, Perk made a jump shot" factor. Otherwise, I've pegged my expectations at Vitaly Potapenko (yes, I'm old, now get off my lawn :P).You think "he might get Zeller's minutes" is "losing our minds"? Or "trending up"? Or "good to see him succeeding in a decent league"? Or "hopes that he could be a good mid-range shooter"?I think "can he be like Al Horford" and "three-point shooter by his mid-twenties" is losing one's mind.
If you are looking for hyperbole, pick up a mirror.

This I agree with. I think hoping that Zizic becomes a slightly better version of a pre-ACL tear Perkins is what we can reasonably hope for.
Would that be a Vitaly that didn't smoke and drink. That would be an excellent player. ( Yes I am old too!)
Yes, but here’s what we do know.
Here's what you don't know. The level of his competition. Maybe i am wrong but i think it is important in order to place the things you know into contextHe wasn’t supposed to get many minutes behind Semih Erden.
Says who ? Erden today is a d-league level center and not the 10mpg NBA player you remember
Being optimistic in one thing , kicking out of the team everyone not named Horfod because the Serbian Barkley is coming is another.
This year is Zizic (whom if you bother searching i liked much more than Bedner before the draft) last year it was Mickey. I don't think that Mickey is what people here projected him to be. Now Zizic is anointed as the solution to the Cs frontcourt problems. Because of highlight videos and stat lines.
It's funny though that if you don't follow the flow here you are a **** and antagonistic. Actually watching the games is i guess irrelevant

found it-january 8-scored 16points on 5-7 shooting,6-6 from line 8 rebounds 3 offensive 5 defensive ,3 blocks and 2 turnoversi,1assist all in 26min-also only 2 fouls, had all the blocks for the team and was rebound leader
thats a nice stat for a new young player to put up
last game 14 points was a breakthrough ,now he puts up 16 pt 5-7 and perfect from foulline
best stats on team as there were several players bunched at 20-23 points-but as a total game with 3 blocks 3 offensive boards with 8 rebound total zizac wins the stat mvp-and tommy point
So I'm still a bit unclear about this.. but is it official there is zero chance Zizic comes in this season and he will come over next season for the team? Or is there a chance Zizic can come by the second half of the season.
I wouldn't mind if he stayed overseas and improved this season while coming in next season to Boston, but I'm just curious.

Prior to him going to Turkey, there was a small chance (I'd say less than 10%). But as his Turkish team paid $1.5 million for Zizic just for the rest of the year, and the Celtics can only pay $650k to buy him out of his contract, it's zero for all intents and purposes. He's allowed to come over, but there's no way that's contractually happening.

Alright makes sense. Thanks! TP.
Really have high hopes for him though, and I will not be sad when Zeller and Olynyk leave.

Žižić will hopefully be a 3rd Croatian to play for the Celts. All bigs, all centers. Rađa would definitly be a 5 in todays game.

Darüşşafaka plays today with Spanish team Baskonia, at 17.00 GMT, or 12.00 US Eastern Time. Game is in İstanbul.
Baskonia sits at 3rd place with an 11-5 record, 1 win behind the leader CSKA Moscow. Darüşşafaka is at 8th place with an 8-8 record.
Baskonia is know for their uptempo style and taking quick shots. They are selected "the most fun team to watch" in a recent poll between Euroleague GMs. Also, they managed to go to final four last year. While they lost some important players like Bourousis this summer, they made additions like Shane Larkin, Bargnani, and Beaubois to stay at a high level. Chase Budinger also plays there for some weeks now.
Zizic will compete with a washed up Bargnani, up and coming German center Voigtmann, and maybe Diop.

Potapenko was a pretty good player for the C's before he when home...him leaving when he did bugged me.This was more for the "look, Perk made a jump shot" factor. Otherwise, I've pegged my expectations at Vitaly Potapenko (yes, I'm old, now get off my lawn :P).

Personally, I'm hopeful about Zizic, like I'd be hopeful about any Celtics pick. I don't know what we're going to get, though, until he is over here and playing against NBA players.
Probably a disappointing game considering only 2 deffensive boards in 33 mins
Could he be our Embiid neutralizer?

this guy has some motor,he can block shots get offensive rebounds and he turns and blocks-these eastern europeans can be quite tough and he enjoys banging
-he showed some nice stuff in this game -also a good foul shooter which sometimes indicates that they can extend range -horford has and lopez just started this year-
david blatt used zizic as an inspirational topic -
when he was 16 he saw this kid go up against a huge seasoned pro and he kept knocking zizic to the ground and zizic just kept getting up and going at the guy, time after time and blatt said that kid is going to play in NBA
zizic also had an older brother another 6-10 kid who is playing in college in america -they played basketball against each other constantly as kids-

11 points and 8 boards in 15 minutes so far.Leading both teams in points and rebounds.
Wish we could play the guy this year.11 points and 8 boards in 15 minutes so far.Leading both teams in points and rebounds.
This guy is a lottery pick !
AND highest Performance Rating- whatever that is.
Do you think when Ante gets here he'll be expected just to jack up a bunch of threes and get no rebs? He's completely different then Okynyk so no.
zizic has 18 rebounds 16points-Impressive. 8 offensive rebounds!
Do you think when Ante gets here he'll be expected just to jack up a bunch of threes and get no rebs?dont forget the lack of PnR defense!
Highlights from the game:he looks pretty good as an under the basket type player. i dont think he can make any shots further than 5 feet from the basket. but he might yet develop a mid range shot, who knows?

@oldtype How do we know that rebounding is particularly translatable from Europe to the NBA? Not that I disagree with what you are saying, but I'd love to see some relevant evidence.
2009 model by John Hollinger shows that when transitioning from the EuroLeague to the NBA:
•Scoring rate decreases 25 percent
•Rebound rate increases by 18 percent
•Assist rate increases by 31 percent (note: NBA assist tallying rules are much more liberal than those in Europe.)
•Shooting percentage drops by 12 percent
•Overall, player efficiency rating drops by 30 percent
http://basketball-statistics.com/euroleaguenowincludedintheboxscorepredictionsystem.html
2010 model by John Nichols, who now runs analytics for the Cavaliers. Rebounding by far has the highest predictive value of NBA performance out of any Euroleague stat:
FGA: 0.2971
FG%: 0.3004
3PA: 0.6834
3P%: 0.7729
FTA: 0.4111

he may turn out to be better than steve adams, at least offensively. that would be nice.

from what little i know, i would agree with your assessment. from limited videos, zizic looks to be quicker, more athletic.
I spent a fair amount of time scouting both Zubac and Zizic I still feel confident that Zizic is a better prospect even though Zubac is off to a good start.
That little chin-up on the ring will quickly get him a T in the NBA, though ;)https://twitter.com/EuroLeague/status/830112099259076608Nice! our next enforcer!

Žižić looks much more switchable, along with his interior presence. Zubac will never be able to go far away from the basket. Zubac has softer touch.

In my case there was some cosmic togetherness involved, since, when my mom was pregnant, my aunt saw our basketball olympian Andro Knego (https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Andro_Knego) in a tram, and proposed the name to my parents. With my father being a Cibona Zagreb season ticket holder and with Andro Knego being what he was (80s mans man), my mother agreed. Some of that basketball root definitely stuck on me. Sorry if I took it to detail too much.

Physically and athletically, Zizic reminds me some of Cole Aldrich. The way Zizic moves reminds me of Aldrich. The athleticism, the quickness, the leaping ability reminds me of Aldrich.
Clearly more comfortable in the post on offense than Aldrich. Plus looks an inch or so taller.

I've compared him to Al Horford and Kendrick Perkins several times. Both in terms of body type, run gate and playing style.
There's been so much gushing about this kid, it's nice to see his deficiencies noted. So, what I am hearing (and seeing in film) is that Zizic is a below-average athlete who can't shoot from the outside and his inside game is based on power, not quickness. He doesn't sound like the kind of front-court player who will fit into Brad's system.Physically and athletically, Zizic reminds me some of Cole Aldrich. The way Zizic moves reminds me of Aldrich. Zizic less athletic than Valanciunas and Valanciunas is a below par NBA athlete at center.

Not sure where you get the "below-average athlete". He certainly doesn't appear that to me. Much more athletic than a guy like Perkins. And he does appear to have a decent mid range game, and certainly is a good free throw shooter.Looking at the ample video materials provided in this thread, Zizic looks neither particularly quick closing up space under the basket, or particularly explosive getting off the ground for rebounds or blocks. I haven't seen anything that suggests he's particularly agile, either. I think the below-average athlete is probably fair.

I haven't seen anything that suggests he's particularly agile, either. I think the below-average athlete is probably fair.

Come on. That scouting report also raves about his "strong leaping ability", and in my book he is "adequate" in this department at best. Not sure where you get the "below-average athlete". Here's what Draft Express has to say about him:
NBA teams may wonder what it is that separates Zizic as a starting caliber prospect, as there is nothing extraordinary about his size, length, athleticism or skill-set, even if there's nothing particularly deficient about any of those areas either. - Source: http://www.draftexpress.com/profile/Ante-Zizic-68722/ ©DraftExpress
So I'd guess average is probably appropriate.

Okay, you're right.
So what's happening to his minutes??
The last three games...only 10 minutes per game??

Playoffs. European clubs play the vets in playoff games.

Incorrect. Euroleague playoffs have not started yet. Zizic' team has one more game in the regular season, and they are 9th with only the top 8 teams making it. They need to win, have the top team ahead of them lose, and then win the tiebreaker (which I believe is point differential, and they're over 30 back in that category). So the odds of them making Euroleague playoffs is low.

Then it sounds like what happens in the NBA when teams are basically out of the playoffs picture, they develop the future, and they know he is not in their future plans.

Not really. They've been one game back of the playoffs for about the last four games. And they also have Turkish League games, in which they're tied for 4th out of 16 teams.

Actually, their last match is at home against the team ahead of them in the standigs (Red Star Belgrade). Darussafaka won in Serbia so if they win they'll own the tie breaker (it's head to head). So whoever wins goes through, most important match of the season, probably... Let's see if Zizic starts...
It's this friday.
this is a super nit-picky concern, but I wish more of his boards were defensive rebounds. It is one game. Don't worry.
Now I know that sounds bad, but 4 offensive boards means only 4 defensive boards and I dont really care about the offensive glass.
Obviously a possession is a possession, but I would rather be able to protect our defensive glass. That is where our current issue is and I had kinda hoped Zizic would go a long way to remedy that issue.
Again, its great that he rebounds terrifically on the offensive glass, I just would rather he get more defensive rebounds.
European clubs don't distribute minutes the same way American clubs do. They will play an older vet over a better young kid time and time again. We wouldn't do that here because we want the win too much, well Doc might ;). They want the win too, but they want to win playing the euro league way. Also, there are roster restrictions on non native players and there may be some under the table influences limiting the minutes of the non Turkish kid who is one - leavening and two - making the Native players look bad. I'm thinking the Turkish people have seen enough of him and are ready for him to go.

I feel like every time I see his stats a good portion of his boards are offensive boards.this is a super nit-picky concern, but I wish more of his boards were defensive rebounds. It is one game. Don't worry.
