Title: Choosing Dwight over Kobe. (Amnesty Kobe?)
Post by: JSD on February 22, 2013, 04:12:40 PM
Quote
Mark Cuban suggested that the Los Angeles Lakers may have to consider using their amnesty provision on Kobe Bryant this offseason.

Bryant is owed $30.4 million for the 13-14 season, but continues to play at a high All-Star level.

"If you look at their payroll, even if Dwight (Howard) comes back, you’ve got to ask the question: Should they amnesty Kobe?"

Cuban said he wouldn't consider doing a similar move on Dirk Nowitzki. The Dallas Mavericks have made several cost-saving moves in recent offseasons, such as their decision not to re-sign Tyson Chandler.

"It’s the same reason I wouldn’t get rid of Dirk (Nowitzki). I’ll take a hit for a season rather than get rid of Dirk. That’s just it. I’ve made that commitment to him over the years and he’s returned that commitment. Maybe that’s selfish, but that’s just the way it is."

The Lakers will have the highest luxury tax bill in the NBA for the 12-13 NBA season.

If the Lakers use their amnesty provision, it will more likely be on Metta World Peace and his $7.7 million salary.

The Lakers chose Kobe over Shaq, would stop them from doing the same thing this offseason? Kobe will make more than $10 million more than the next highest paid player next season when he maxes out on his final year at $30 million.

HoopsHype says the Lakers have $78 Million committed next season - this is without Dwight.

If they amnestied Kobe and signed Dwight to a max deal - starting at 16.5M, I think that is the new max in the new CBA, that brings the Lakers down under Luxury Tax.

All that said, I think the Lakers will eat the LT for next season and then rebuild when all their major deals expire. In the summer of 2014 they will be in prime position to make a run at Lebron James with Howard locked up. Imagine Lebron and Dwight together in La La land in their prime? Kiss the title record goodbye.

If they amnestied any star guy it would be Gasol.  But yeah, it's MWP or nobody.

While amnestying other players saves money, applying it to Kobe gets them out of the luxury tax.

Lakers will never amnesty Kobe and its almost a certainty he won't ever be in another jersey in his career.

Funny, I was just talking to a co-worker about this. I said if management went to Howard and said what would it take to get you resigned, and if he said get rid of Kobe, it would happen.

I don't think it would, but it would be a smarter move on LA's part to ditch the 35 year old for the 28 year old center.

It's pretty unlikely that amnestying Kobe would put them under the luxury tax.

If they amnesty Kobe and give Dwight a max extension, they're just a hair below the luxury tax with 5 more roster spots to fill.

Metta World Peace is the most likely amnesty.  Pau Gasol is also a possibility.  Probably not Kobe.

How ironic would that be? Kobe to Shaq then Dwight to Kobe.

Its already happened. Dwight is the future and is going to be given the keys. Kobe will find this out the hard way his next contract negotiation.

Mark Cuban brought it up and major outlets are reporting it. I don't see what is so silly about bringing it to the table here.

Right. I’m talking about as far as forcing him out of town. If I remember correctly, the consensus was that Kobe was going to eventually walk  if Shaq wasn't shipped out. Could Dwight do something similar? I think it is unlikely but def possible.

I think they bite the bullet another season like Cuban will for Dirk.

I think KoMe isn't bending to fit with DH b/c he knows that being the man is soon over for him. He's going to strut around being the "Man" until his contract is up.

Sad day for KoMe when then contract is up. Good day for me! I want him to feel what it's like being just one of the guys on another man's team, I hope DH shows him his butt too! No more butt kissing will need to be done b/c DH is the man not him!

With all that said, I would bet they would trade DH before letting go of KoMe.

Hypothetical for the Lakers braintrust.  What if Howard tells them this summer that the only way he re-ups with them is if they jettison Kobe?  The Lakers would have no choice than to speed up the inevitable - life without Kobe Bryant.

As an added bonus, the Buss heirs would save a boatload of money in present and future luxtax money - no small consideration after they get done paying estate taxes.  The following year, the Lakers will be able to sign both LeBron and another max to near max FA.

Why do people feel the need to correct others when calling him artest? Kidding I hope because I think most people don't care to address a grown man and a laker by his made up name. He's Ron Artest.

And after scoring 38 points in the Lakers' 103-99 win over Cuban's Mavericks on Sunday, Byrant shot back on Twitter.

"Amnesty THAT," Bryant wrote.

Kobe, a-la Michael Jordan, seems to have taken the comment by Cuban personal. He exploded against the Mavericks, scoring 38 points, 12 rebounds, and 7 assists. Bryant was 13-21 from the field and seemed unstoppable in the fourth quarter. Kobe is now the oldest player in NBA history to score 38+ points while shooting 60+ percent in consecutive games.

Not bad for an old man.
