Title: Kris Joseph/Varnado waived? What's next?
Post by: csfansince60s on January 06, 2013, 06:32:21 PM
Just got this from RealGM:

http://forums.realgm.com/boards/viewtopic.php?t=1224443

from Stein's Twitter:

What next? KMart, Birdman, trades?

Joseph really surprised me. Varnado, not at all.

Hopefully birdman, unless they plan on making a trade taking more players back than they send away.

Shame about Joseph, I thought he could be a beneficial player down the line.  But it looks like we're gearing up for some last-minute additions.

Possible FA signing? Birdman? KMart?

Possible trade to come?

Any other reason to waive Joseph?

wow...sorry about KJ, thought he had potiental , but he was 24 years old too I think.

KG really needs a serious or decent replacement when he sits.  Someone who can hold the line , and protect the paint while he is resting and the lead not be wiped out..

Samardo Samuels was released by Cleveland this weekend. Not much upside to him, but I think he'd bring rebounding, grit, and hustle. A slight upgrade from Varnado, perhaps.

Surprised about Joseph. Was his release tied to his contract status?
Title: Re: Kris Joseph/Varnado waived? What's next?
Post by: LooseCannon on January 06, 2013, 06:58:14 PM
Not really surprising.  This is part of the wave of players who will be waived before their contracts become guaranteed.  Chris Douglas-Roberts and Samardo Samuels seems like the most useful players waived under similar circumstances.

I'd like them to use one of those open roster spots to audition D-League bigs on ten-day contracts, which they can start signing players to tomorrow.  They can even bring back Varnado that way.  If Doc really wants a backup point guard, a defense-minded guy like Ben Uzoh is available in the D-League as well.

Do either of these moves impact our cap space?  I mean I know both had very small salaries.  I just don't know how it impacts our cap.

If Joseph is waived, Danny probably has a SF back-up to add in mind.

Do either of these moves impact our cap space?  I mean I know both had very small salaries.  I just don't know how it impacts our cap.

They had to be waived by 5pm to prevent their contracts from being guaranteed.  After that, the team would take a cap hit if it waived either player to make room to sign a free agent.

EDIT: 5pm tomorrow

Kmart isn't the rim protector we need. No way should he be playing ahead of Sully or Bass either. Birdman makes more sense to me.

Cs are very close to being a the lux tax payer. Assuming they decide to add salary via FAs or trade, they need every dollar they can get under that threshold. Those $$$ can be spent more wisely than Joseph on a 'win now' team.
Title: Re: Kris Joseph/Varnado waived? What's next?
Post by: Tr1boy on January 06, 2013, 07:26:29 PM
Varnado was just a dumb pickup by Danny. If he was not good enough for the Heat, i doubt he improved his play so much in a few months to be a promising rookie now. Waste of money

Joseph on the other hand had potential. But look at his stats in the nbdl. Everything looks good, except for 403 fg percentage. That is pretty horrendous

Also when he had a few garbage mins to play, he didn't make you notice him. Actually i think the last game , he really screwed up by missing two wide open three point shots. Maybe unless you are sure you can get it in, you drive in to the basket and try to dunk a spectacular one instead.

There is something definitely brewing. Don't think they will bring in K Mart. Just too much risk, having to deal with his attitude. The one guy i could see them get for cheap is Chris Andersen. He has height , decent skills and energy. All things we can use just in case

Well, it looks like we're at the limit where contracts become fully guaranteed or something, also we soon can start handing out 10-day contracts.

It can also be something as simple as a FA pick-up. I don't have to be due to a "blockbuster" deal.

The Celtics needed a warm body as a big and Varnado was a reasonable choice for a short-term fix who likely would be waived at this deadline (although I would have preferred Brian Butch).

Also, Varnado was injured and didn't play for the Heat in summer league and preseason, so didn't get an adequate opportunity to earn a spot with the Heat.

Sounded a little whacked to me but:

"The Lakers, Celtics, and Kings are reportedly very close to a trade that would send Francisco Garcia and Demarcus Cousins to the Boston Celtics. Marcus Thorton, Chuck Hayes,Thomas Robinson, and Aaron Brooks to the Los Angeles Lakers. Pau Gasol, Avery Bradley, Jason Terry,Jared Sullinger, and two future first round picks from the Celtics to the Sacramento Kings.**The only reason the deal has not happened yet is because the Lakers are being reluctant to accept the offer."

Started yesterday as very unsubstantiated and implausible rumor.

Kenyon Martin would be awesome, if he came midway through the season under Doc and Danny's terms knowing he won't be guaranteed minutes but needs to be an enforcer and fill in for KG if we need him to. I think he would if he wanted to get back in the league what better way than come to a team without a lot of size and try and make a deep playoff push?! I wouldn't doubt if Danny has already spoke with him or Birdman.

You can trade players anytime before the deadline Feb 21st. You can't sign a player and trade him right off that's why we can't trade Bass or Green until the 15th.

I think...

I could see the Celtics being involved in a blockbuster as a third team.  For example, there's a rumor of a possibly Varejao-to-Minny trade, but that the Cleveland doesn't want Derrick Williams.  I am pessimistic about Boston's ability to offer enough to get Varejao, but perhaps Ainge can nab that unwanted mid-level player in a big deal by offering up something like Lee and a first-rounder.  Not for Williams, though.  I am just using him as an example of an opening.

If you could flip Lee for a center worth more than the minimum but paid less than the MLE and a wing who is a downgrade on Lee as a bench guard but probably a defensive upgrade on Lee as a small forward against bigger players, would you do it?

If a trade happens, I bet its something smaller scale...like  for someone like Dalembert

Derrick Williams and Jeff Green on the same team?

The Boston Celtics are being linked to a blockbuster trade that will involve Courtney Lee and Brandon Bass.

Blockbusters are getting lamer and lamer.

Doesn't non-guaranteed contracts become guaranteed in couple of days? Celtics appear to be clearing roster spots for future signings who can help the team than keep dead weight at the end of the bench. I wouldn't rule out a trade though. But its way too early to be speculating however.

If we can get someone without losing Bradley and/or Sully I'd be fine with it.

From @SherrodbCSN : "league sources confirmed that there's "growing" interest in Courtney Lee"

Lee and Sully for Gortat?
Its a silly question don't know all about trades/salary and all that but is there a certain date trades have to be made or can they happen anytime?

You can trade players anytime before the deadline Feb 21st. You can't sign a player and trade him right off that's why we can't trade Bass or Green until the 15th.

I think...
ok thanks yea remember that dreaded deadline for players but didn't know they could happen already

By our rough per-game calculation, the Celtics save about $275,000 by cutting Joseph after 33 games. That's right around what a late-season, veteran-minimum addition would cost. Considering the Celtics are hard-capped at the $74.3 million tax apron -- and roughly $71.2 million is committed to current costs -- every available dollar gives the Celtics that little bit extra wiggle room to maneuver later in the season.

Sam Young got waived by Indiana. He is a solid 2/3 off the bench.

Best player who has been cut so far. Legit NBA player.

A poor man's Tony Allen, yes? Big enough to guard 3's?

Sam Young is a big two who can muscle big two guards like Kobe Bryant. That is his main value as an NBA player. His ability to matchup physically against big two guards. A good defender/rebounder but not an elite one.

Against small forwards with legitimate size and talent, Sam Young is undersized (6-6, 220lbs) and is a poor defender / rebounder. And he isn't good enough offensively to make up for it. Too limited. Against less offensively capable small forwards, Young can be a passable option at SF. So not really an option to throw against somebody like LeBron.

Offensively, Young has a decent two point jump shot but lacks further range. That is the main drawback in his game. He can finish reasonably around the rim and he can post up against smaller players.

I consider Sam Young a middle of the pack to slightly below average backup two guard. Or a well below average backup SF. An excellent third string 2/3 which is probably the role he'll see most often due to his limitations as jump-shooter but in the right situation he can play more minutes. A big physical two guard who can play a small bit of time at small forward also.

He sounds like a more experienced Dionte Christmas.

I would prefer Donte Greene to Sam Young.

I think the team needs a small forward with good size behind Pierce and J.Green. They have an excellent first line (Pierce at SF, J.Green at PF) against small-ball lineups but they have no substitutes behind them to give them a breather now and then.

Their options at PF are too slow (Sully) or dumb (Bass) to defend those lineups well. They need someone who can give a different option to Pierce + J.Green when they need a rest, or are injured, or struggling with foul trouble. Whether that is a more athletic PF with good defensive range or a third string SF with good size. It would be good to have. Gives some insurance against an injury to J.Green also without forcing Doc to play three guard lineups.

I think Donte Greene provides a superior option matchup wise with his size (6-11, 230lbs) and athleticism in these type of scenarios. Donte Greene is also a legitimate albeit streaky threat from three point range.

I'd really like to see Danny sign Donte Greene. Shore up that third string SF/PF spot.

Yeah, that's the guy. Solid defender, streaky shooter.

Kings coaching staff mishandled him very badly. Talented player who's slipped between the cracks.

Found this on Donte Greene, posted a couple weeks ago:

- I spotted former Orange forward Donte Greene working out in the weight room during practice. Greene played with the NBA’s Sacramento Kings last season, and was reported to be close to signing with the Brooklyn Nets this fall when he broke his foot and required surgery.
