Inspired by the movie line and video game trivia threads, I thought I'd start a basketball trivia thread.
To kick things off, a two parter:
1A) How many former Celtics were on the NBA's Top 50 at 50 list? 1B)Name them?
-
these are the players who are on the list that played for the celts at one time
archibald
bird
cousy
cowens
hondo
sam jones
pistol pete
mchale
parrish
russell
sharman
walton
-
Missing 1.
-
Joe Kline.
Tp Please! ;D

Sorry, I know spelling's not the #1 priority on this board, especially when you're typing down 12 names; but Parish with two r's is just a pet peeve of mine.
I know, I have a problem.
-
Missing 1.
Dominique?
Should be, but no.
I know it's not Tommy, DJ, Ainge, or KC Jones... I'm losing my mind haha... no idea
is it an obvious miss?

I'm with you. I have no idea either. I just know 'Nique wasn't on the list. First name that came to my mind was McAdoo, but I didn't think he was on the list. And when I checked, I was right. He's not on it.
-
dave bing.
-
Matt, I don't know if you're right, but you just beat me to the punch!
-
dave bing.
NICELY DONE... Even after you said it, I had to look it up. TP from me
-
I'll split the Tps between Dark Lord and Matt. Who wants to do the next question?
-
Who was the original retired #18 (not Cowens) and what Pac-10 school did he attend prior to his NBA career?
-
Who was the original retired #18 (not Cowens) and what Pac-10 school did he attend prior to his NBA career?
Loscy. No idea where he went to school.
-
I know he went to Oregon.
-
TPs for both of you... Loscy was pretty easy but nice work on Oregon.
-
Which current franchise has the longest streak between championships?

76ers?
-
Nope
-
Whats the Question, the longest break in between winning titles or the most time since the team last won one?
-
Most time since a team won one. Sorry, I had an unclear question.
-
Is it teams still in existence? Because if so its the Hawks.

Existing franchises

Still open.

Warriors?

Clips?
I think they were the braves at one stage - early 80's?

I've got it:
It's the Kings. But back then they were
the Rochester Royals. 1950-51 season.

Here's one I heard on the radio today
The question was how many American born white players drafted since 1990 have made the all star team?
The follow up question was to name the player(s).
While I was trying to figure out the first one I figured out the second one and rather quickly too.
Here's a hint. He's not Scala.
-
Wally & Gugs?

Laettner & Googs?
-
Laettner & Googs?
Googs & Gugs?
...and more Googs...all Googs all the time
-
Wally was born in Spain and Brad Miller wasn't drafted. Those were the other two, I had thought of.
-
Just saw this thread - here's a fun and difficult question:
What is the record for most games played in a regular season, and who has it?
Just to get it out of the way the answer is not "82 shared by 2000 guys".
-
I am pretty sure they said just Laettner on the radio (I heard it too...it was Meter on the WEEI morning show I believe), but that is clearly wrong, since I am sure Googs was an All Star.
-

I know Tyrone Corbin played 84 games in a season. Not sure if that's the record though.

Googs was definitely an all-star, definitely drafted and definitely born in the U.S., so Meter is (once again) wrong.

Corbin did play 84, but that's not the record. TP just for knowing that off the top of your head though.

I have a whole bunch of useless information thanks to collecting basketball cards as a kid. I can pretty much tell you the height of any guy that played between 90-93, according to either Skybox or Upper Deck. Pathetic? Yes. Depressing? Yes. Wait, where was I going with this?

Hey, I did the same thing except from 88-92 or so. And I put mine in order in those books of laminated sleeves, too. I've got to sell those some day, the early sets before they jacked up production are probably worth a bit of change.

Laettner & Googs?

im guessin thats a typo and you meant brad miller...mike nevermade an ASG
so is the final answer 3? Googs, Laetner, and Wally
-
On the radio it was Laetner. It seems Mike Miller hasn't played an all-star game yet. It seems Googs is also right. The only thing I can think of is if maybe Googs was some sort of injury replacement, so they aren't counting him, but more than likely the radio just got it wrong

If its WEEI, then its almost certainly a case of them getting it wrong.

Who is the only player to be MVP of the NBA and the ABA?

Dr.J

Yeah, I think it was the big show

Because nobody seems to be asking the next question, here is a tricky one.
Among those players who have never averaged more than 10 points per game in a single season, who has made the most 3-pointers in his career ?

Lenny Wilkens
No. He had a pretty bad winning percentage. He's 13th in this list.
-
Shoot I thought it said who'd won 1000 games.
-
This question might be too obscure. Here's a hint: he's still coaching right now.

Ding ding ding. Winner. TP.
Rick Adelman gets no love. He coached some amazing teams in Portland and Sactown. Went to the Finals twice. Won 50 games in a season 10 times. Too bad he couldn't win in the playoffs.

either sloan or riley?

adelman has a better win% than pat riley?
nevermind, i was thinking Popp was top 3...but he doesnt have 1000 games....riley is obviosuly top 3

Keith Smart is one of 3 current NBA coaches who have won an NCAAA championship as a player. Name the other two.
(really tough question...I just did some research after seeing Smart coaching for the Kings tonight).
-
Keith Smart is the easy answer. I'm going to say Randy Wittman and Mike Woodson because they both played for Bobby Knight and they won all those titles in the 70s/80s.

Wittman is one of the other two (Indiana 1981)
Woodson's career at Indiana was sandwiched in between two championships (1976 and 1981)

Did George Karl win at UNC?

Off the top of my head, I'm guessing Spoelstra and Van Gundy.

Three current NBA players have a NBA and NCAA championship, name them?
-
Greenbean: I'll say Van Gundy, Spoelstra, Frank, Vogel and Thibodeau.
-
Three current NBA players have a NBA and NCAA championship, name them?
Jason Terry, Richard Hamilton, Richard Jefferson...wow..that was really hard, and I'm not sure I got a single one. Jordan Farmar? Aha! Brandan Wright! Right?
-

I removed this, since I cheated and looked it up and didn't want to ruin the question for others.

You got the first two. Jefferson wasn't on the title team at Arizona. I had to cheat to get the third guy. No way I would have gotten it. I don't want to ruin it since I cheated.
The list will likely get bigger this year as the Bulls and Heat both have two NCAA champions each and the Thunder and Lakers each have one.

-
No way Kobe Bryant has 1300 blocks. He'd need to be averaging more than 1 block per game for his career. He probably doesn't have half of that. I also doubt he has 6,000 rebounds.
I say it's Kareem. If not, Karl Malone.
----
The other NCAA+NBA champion is Corey Brewer. No idea about the 4th guy.

Really? I can't imagine many wings that could get to 1300 blocks other than maybe AK47 and Dr J.
I'd guess a big man is more likely. Tough to think of bigs that could pass or pilfer like KG though, never-mind both. Malone might've played long enough to get them but he wasn't much of a shot-blocker.
Kareem also probably has the assists due to longevity and definitely has the blocks so he might be a possibility. If not Hakeem, David Robinson or Robert Parish would be the only other guys that could meet the defensive and scoring criteria. None of those guys probably come close to KG in assists though. Also Elvin Hayes but I know steals and blocks weren't recorded for his whole career. Dr J would be the obvious choice but I don't know if the ABA disqualifies him.
-
Actually, looking at it again I guess I'm wrong. It would be virtually impossible for a big to score 19000 points and end up with only ~6000 boards. Then again I don't see how a wing would be athletic enough to do all the other things and not grab more rebounds than that too.
-

It's at least 6000, not around 6000. The correct answer could have 6001 or 16001 boards.
Looked up Olajuwon out of curiosity and he's easily got every category except "only" 3058 assists. So it's not him.
-
The 4th in Nazr Mohammed, UK 1998, Spurs 2005, currently with OKC.

I think Wilt and Kareem "did" it, but Kareem's first few seasons didn't have steals recorded, and none of Wilt's had blocks or steals. Same for Russell.
I thought I'd nailed it with Pippen, but only 947 blocks.
Chris Webber is very close.

Right but KG has well more than double that. So if the guy was a big the question would probably be something more like at least 12000 rebounds.
-
Name the only NBA player with 20,000 career points and 9000 career assists?
Can't be anybody other than Oscar right? Payton and Stockton must be close but I don't think either scored close to him.

TP for you. Payton is just under on the assists. Stockton just under on the points.

I accidentally wrote my question wrong, it should be 3060 assists and not 3400 assists (the odd assist number is to eliminate Hakeem who had 3058 assists).
No one has gotten this guy, even with my error (though obviously Hakeem was close). Just let me know when you want the answer (to the actual question with the correct assists).

that was my guess as well, but I looked and he doesn't have the assists (just under 400 shy).
Drexler is the correct answer.

I think Zaza is one! He got drafted in like, '03 if I remember right. I can't ever remember him being injured severely. Joe Johnson is another guy I think.
Did Richard Jefferson ever retire officially?

He's still on the Warriors roster, but Looney and Javale (haha) have replaced his role. Although nobody can quite injure people like Zaza.
[dang], how did I forget old man VC too. He's played in the NBA longer than Jaren Jackson has been alive
