Title: What did you think of Kyrie Irving when he was drafted?
Post by: syfy9 on February 17, 2013, 06:55:25 PM
I admit I was incredibly surprised he has stayed relatively healthy. He's growing to be one of my favorite players to watch.

Thought the Cavs made a huge mistake with him and Tristan Thompson.

Thought they should've drafted Derrick Willaims and Enes Kanter.

Wrong and wrong.

I was totally totally wrong .  But honestly, how many people ever really got to see him other than his home high school crowd....he hardly played at Duke.

Knowing what I know now , he would have been a first round pick for me,    he is close as anybody to the next CP3

He has the skills to become the best scoring point guard in the NBA.

I thought he was going to be a bust, as well.  Just too unproven, injury prone, and unathletic.

That's why nobody should trust my evaluations of draftees.

Kyrie Irving and to a lesser extent Tristan Thompson are great examples of why selling off picks because a draft is going to be "weak" is a really, really dumb idea.  How strong a draft is usually ends up being a matter of how players develop, not what their talent level is when they are drafted.

The 2010 draft was supposedly STACKED and so far it has produced mixed results.  The 2009 draft, on the other hand, was supposedly super weak and has turned out quite a few quality players.

The 2011 draft was supposed to be epically weak due to the impending lockout, and Kyrie Irving was supposedly a weak #1 overall.

Yet here we are and Irving is considered the next great point guard, maybe the next great player period.  Crazy.

Meanwhile, John Wall (2010) and Anthony Davis (2012), the top guys from "stacked" drafts, appear to be quality players.  But neither has really shown franchise-altering, dominant ability yet.

I didnt think he would mount to much..wrong!! Im in a fantasy keeper league and that year of the draft, i had the top 2 picks. So I pick Enes Katner at 1 and Derrick Williams at 2...ugh!!!!!!!

I thought, like most draftniks, there were possibly two excellent players coming out of his draft, him and Derrick Williams, and a bunch of role players or busts.

Looks like I was wrong and there was only one excellent player.

Never thought he would rise to such levels of play or do so as quickly as he did though.

I thought it was a bad draft with no franchise-level talents.

Irving, to me, was intriguing but I found it too easy to believe that the ten-game stretch before his injury was a fluke.  People put together stretches of good basketball all the time.  Why was his any different?

Let's just say that he has shown me exactly why his was different.

Being a Duke fan, I saw his games before he got hurt there, and he was destroying everybody in front of him as a freshman.  Figured he'd be great.

As a Duke fan, I probably saw every one of his game in college (which wasn't many).

I thought it was obvious he would be good.  Possible All-Star.

Never did I think he would become an All-Star so fast.  Not only that, but he's. Looking like he will shortly be considered a superstar.

My judgment was probably colored by how mad at him I was for giving Duke so little, but showing so much promise.  And then abruptly leaving.

I thought he was the clear #1 pick in that draft, but didn't think he would be anywhere near as good as he has been.  I thought that draft was pretty weak going into it and thought he would be more like a Kenny Anderson (pre-injury) type player i.e. pretty good but nothing special.  He is clearly special and has a chance to go down as one of the all time greats if he stays healthy and keeps progressing like he has.

I didn't have much of a thought on him, since he missed most of his college season.

"If he stays healthy"
Could be said of so many players in so many sports.
I remember endless threads on celticsblog comparing Tmac to PP, and that troublesome phrase would often appear.
Anyway, in Irving's case I'm with Chris. Didn't know what to make of him and still don't.

I thought he was unproven having only played 7 or 8 college games.

I was wrong. He is the real deal and the Cavs made the right choice.

If anyone is worthy enough to be run the next era for the Cavs, Irving is a credible candidate.

Kyrie may be the most complete player in the NBA....one day.

Way too early on Kanter. Williams...I still have hope, but it's dwindling fast.

I wonder if Clipper fans are sitting around thinking, "Man we could of had Kyrie Irving to team with Blake Griffin, but instead we have to settle for Chris Paul."

Lol, obviously things are working out pretty well for the Clippers, but I still can't believe they traded that pick away.  Trading away a pick that turns into a guy like Irving is the kind of thing that would haunt most franchises for years.

You got that right (first bit)
I was excited for him, (more for the prospect of a partially Aussie star) an thought he could be awesome, but not this awesome,

I dunno, but my opinion is that the Clippers are better off with Paul - he's still the better passer, the better leader, and the more mature player. Paul-Griffin is better than Kyrie-Griffin, even though the second tandem is a lot younger.

It's a give or take thing, but the Clippers are contending now. It isn't 100% that the Clippers would be this caliber or better with Kyrie. CP3 has that winning aura.

Yeah, the future would be brighter, but it's probably bright enough as is.

Yeah, but there is a chance CP3 walks next year. There is no chance Irving would be going anywhere, and at a third the price.

I've always thought that Tracy McGrady, in his prime, was one of the most under-appreciated players of our time. One on one, I've never seen a more dangerous player. Faster than anyone taller, taller than anyone faster, stronger than he looked, athetlically as gifted as anyone we've seen. A truly unguardable force. On top of that, a much better rebounder, defender, and above all passer the given credit for.

Put his best year next to Kobe's, and he easily bests him:

Timing was just never right for the guy, and his teammates were always hurt of nonexistent. We kept waiting for post-season success and never appreciated the brilliance that was before us.

I thought that when he was at duke he was an absolute monster in the second half of the year when he played.  He commanded the game well while at duke and that is huge. After all that he led that Duke team to the final four i believe and he had a great tournement.  I thought he was gonna be a better Pro because the pro game is better suited for players like him because he can get anywhere on the court with dribble penetration.  In two years he will be the best point guard in the entire NBA!!!

Didn't think he'd be this good but uh I also think he's got to return the cavs to some sort of relevancy and stay healthy for a full season before I'm gushing as hard as some of y'all
