According to Shaq, he was 6'9 when he was 13...he mentions it around the 1:44 mark.

..and then there is this 14 year old girl from Brazil who is 6'9 and still growing.

I guess its not very rare. So, I don't see any reason not to believe the story. Genes (his dad is 7'2 according to the article and his grand-ma is 6'9) plus excessive growth hormones might be responsible.

You really can't tell by the looks though...Greg Oden and LeBron look a lot older than their age.
