Game Notes

The Celtics welcome former Celtic Greg Stiemsma and the Timberwolves to the Garden for their only visit to Boston this season.  The Wolves are 3-5 on the road and the Celtics are 5-4 at home.  The Celtics are 5-5 in their last 10 games while the Wolves are 3-7 in their last 10.   In their only meeting last season, the Celtics beat the Wolves 100-79 at the Target Center.

The Celtics should be well rested as they have been off since Sunday.  Doc gave the older players Monday off from practice as well.  Rondo has been off a week,  since his ejection vs the Nets last Wednesday so he may even be a little rusty.  The Wolves are playing in the second of back to back games,  beating the Sixers 105-88 in Philly on Tuesday night.

Key Matchups
(http://i.cdn.turner.com/si/.e1d/img/4.0/global/basketball/nba/players/3959.jpg)  vs  (http://i.cdn.turner.com/si/.e1d/img/4.0/global/basketball/nba/players/4391.jpg)
Brandon Bass  vs Kevin Love
Kevin Love is a very impressive player.  He is averaging 21.7 points per game and 15.3 rebounds per game.  He shoots the 3 well enough to win the 3 point contes and can score inside as well.  Bass is going to have his hands full trying to keep Love off his game.

(http://i.cdn.turner.com/si/.e1d/img/4.0/global/basketball/nba/players/4149.jpg)  vs  (http://i.cdn.turner.com/si/.e1d/img/4.0/global/basketball/nba/players/3717.jpg)
Rajon Rondo vs Luke Ridnour
Rondo should have a speed advantage over Ridnour. He should also be well rested and ready to play. As Rondo goes, so go the Celtics and they need Rondo to be aggressive and set the pace for the game.

Keys to the Game
Defense - The Celtics must defend.  They've been playing defense in spurts and that just isn't enough.  They have struggled to get stops at times and they need to bring their tough defensive game on a consistent basis.   The offense feeds off of the defense and if the Celtics can't get stops they struggle on the other end as well.

Rebound - The Celtics must get rebounds to prevent second chance points and fast breaks.   Rebounding takes effort and desire and the Celtics have got to show both and crash the boards as a team.  Kevin Love might just out-rebound the Celtics all by himself if they don't aggressively crash the boards.

Be Aggressive - The Celtics have to be aggressive in going after loose balls and rebounds and in taking the ball to the basket.  They also have to be aggressive on defense.  When they are aggressive in going to the hoop good things happen.   They must be the more aggressive team and they have to stop depending on jumpers, especially when the jumpers aren't falling.

X-Factors
Rust vs Rest vs Fatigue
The Celtics have been off since Sunday and so will be rested.  Let's hop that the rest doesn't cause them to come in rusty.  The Celtics should look to take advantage of the fact that the Wolves could be fatigued playing in back to back games on the road.

That would be awesome!  Bradley making his season debut, starting next to Rondo, fresh off his two game vacation to Mexico suspension.

Alas, I highly doubt it.

I'd put the over/under at 15 rebounds for Kevin Love tonight... and I'd take the over.  With the Celtics winning anyway of course.

PG: Luke Ridnour
SG: Malcolm Lee
SF: Josh Howard

That is a seriously weak group of starters on the perimeter. Big advantages for Boston at each of those three positions. Barbosa (Barea) and Green (D.Cunningham) should have advantages in the bench positions too. I'd say it's neutral between Shved and C-Lee.

Agreed.  He will be gobbling up boards.

Interested to see Sully vs Love at some point out there.

Up against Bass and Sully? I'm taking the over. Love's an all right to solid player on a borderline-awful team, so his statline will be stuffed.

The T-Wolves still walk away with an L, of course.

I was hoping doc would start LEE over terry but i knew he wouldn't.

Good decision to keep Jason Terry as the starter with Malcolm Lee starting for Minnesota. Weak player. Good opportunity for Boston to get more offense on the floor with Terry instead of playing Courtney Lee.

Terry is the better option as the starting SG tonight.

Agree, need to toughen up the defense, but at a quick glance don't know what the adjustment should be. Howard's hitting a couple of long jumpers, so don't know if their offense is sustainable as is.

I really like Dante Cunningham. I'd like to see him play for the Celtics one day. Good end of bench guy. Nice versatility between the two forward spots.

I think D.Cunningham is Minnesota's best defensive option against Jeff Green. Their other small forwards are too small to cover Green.

Green is clearly playing differently the past 3 games. Moving on offense, they are looking for him to post-up, he is involved in the offense almost every possession.  The results are good offensively. He still seems consistently a step or 2 behind on D.

I like Courtney Lee on Shved. I'd like to see Doc sync up their minutes.

I don't think Jason Terry can defend Shved. Too small. I think Shved will be very comfortable in the pick and roll against Terry. Especially passing over the top of Terry to find open shooters but also in shooting over the top of the smaller Terry too.

I think D.Cunningham is Minnesota's best defensive option against Jeff Green.
so far tonight their best defensive option against Jeff Green is to just let him shoot  :-\

Jeff's playing pretty well..  ???
started pretty rough.
but admittedly getting better as the game goes on.  happy to eat crow if he continues playing better

Steimsma looks good out there.  Why can't we get bench guys like that?  oh wait, we did.   ::)
Right...short $$$ too..!

With the exception of you know.. Not actually having that short money to spend, sure.
right, because all that money thrown at Green, JET, Lee, Collins and Darko has been soooo worth it.

Collins and Darko I'll give you, but with the money we spent on them we still couldn't have resigned Stiemsma.

And there's no way I'd rather have Stiemsma than Jet, Lee or Green. And Green didn't have anything to do with Stiemsma by the way.

Derrick Williams needs to watch some David West tape to learn how an undersized power forward should play in the NBA.

There is nothing that West does that Derrick Williams can not do.

Collins got the minimum. Stiemsma got a little more than the minimum.

Boston could only offer the minimum. Unable to match Minny's offer.

Because we didn't have any rights to Stiemsma. Or at least very limited ones. Collins got the minimum, less than Greg got. Minnesota offered him more than we could without us using the MLE.

And he probably wanted to be closer to home. Cause he's a person too.

Steimsma averaging 3.5 pts, 2.5 boards and 1 block in 13 minutes.  He's making 2.5 million and would not have taken less (he's have been crazy to). Collins makes 1.3.

Wilcox has been a good rebounder throughout his career.

Shocked at how badly he struggling this year.

Well, he's been a really good rebounder at the PF position. When he played the C position, he struggled to box out bigger bodies. Still did a good job pursuing and grabbing rebounds though which he isn't doing at the moment.

Pierce needs to play fewer minutes and he needs to stop dribbling. Clearly he can still score, but any time he dribbles, it is like there is a 50-50 chance he will lose the ball.

great to see this team finally have a 4th quarter where they have a lead and actually BUILD on it through the quarter.

on a sidenote, does anyone else think Shved looks like their company's IT guy?

Chris Wilcox making entry passes is probably not a great idea.

And I think Rondo might hate Jeff Green.

well ESPN is showing a rarity.  C's currently have every player who's played tonight as a + in the +/- category and every TW as a negative.  Can't recall ever seeing that before

Loving this win, but the guard defense continues to stink, especially Rondo

I have been impressed by the rotations on D by our bigs tonight.  I think Sully, Bass, and Wilcox all have improved their hustle and smarts on the rotations tonight and it has helped our rebounding.  Especially in the 2nd half.  Feels like our D is slowly improving.

I think Sully is very noticeable for me, maybe he thinks that he can't block shots, so might as well just take charges...and he is hustling to get playign time. Like Bradley last year!!

Sullinger huge tonight.  Terry too.

Yea. Good draft pick and good signing. Sully will be a nice building block or potentially a nice trade chip.

We are getting better, but this win is fools gold.

Wolves are exhausted.

Rondos guard D was as poor as ever. The whole defense just collapses to help on his man and it's all over from there.
Some poor decision making passing the basketball aswell.

Bad habits were rewarded tonight.

is it me, or does it seem like Green plays better when Rondo isnt on the floor? it seems like when the ball is moving freely he gets his shots

but when Rondo has the ball he rarely gets any looks...I thought rondo started to pass to him later in the game but some bad passes/breaks(JJ Barea flopping) didnt really get going

overall, a pretty good game from green, 8points, 4rebounds...the rebounds are what's nice to me. he had 6 against milwaukee and 4 tonight

The fact that green came out hot in the fist half meant that we could use him to space the floor in the second, and it worked.

Only got to watch the end of the third and the start of the 4th :(

But nice bit of stat and analysis from celticstown (celticstown.com):

Quote
The Celtics were 4-17 from 3-point range, but they were 4-7 on spot-up 3-point attempts. They were also 0-4 on off-screen 3-pointers, once again proving that Ray Allen’s old sets in which he would scamper through four different screens before jacking up a triple really don’t work with the personnel on this team.

Does 4 attempts mean that there's not a lot of "screen maze" plays tonight? Seems that Doc's going away from it from the past few games I watched.

Jason Terry is a pick and roll player. And a spot up shooter. We are doing his ability an injustice by trying to make him into the Ray Allen of this team. I want to see more pick and pop with KG. He was excellent in Dallas with Dirk at this. It was Dallas fourth quarter offense int he last 4 minutes of games.
