I deserve a smack upside the head for omitting Black Betty by Ram Jam.

How about the master himself.... Bob Dylan, Highway 61

Oh God said to Abraham, "Kill me a son"
Abe says, "Man, you must be puttin' me on"
God say, "No." Abe say, "What ?"
God say, "You can do what you want Abe, but
The next time you see me comin' you better run"
Well Abe says, "Where do you want this killin' done ?"
God says. "Out on Highway 61".

  • "He fiddles...and diddles..."
Came here to specifically mention Radar Love, thinking it might not be a song known to many in the under 30 years of age group. Then see its mentioned in the OP. TP slam.
TP to another 'old man' of the blog Nick.

I'll add a TP to the bucket.  We "more experienced", as I prefer to say, guys need to stick together.   ;)

I thought of Radar Love second after "Born to be Wild" by Steppenwolf which was also the sound track to the film "Easy Rider" that was like an anthem..to some of us.

Also, as anyone who's listened to Billy Idol (Dancing with Myself, Rebel Yell, etc.) will tell you , if his music doesn't get your blood pumping (and foot to the floor), nothing will.   ;D
TP to you. Born to be Wild has to be like an all-time great driving down the road songs. Can't believe it wasn't mentioned before this.

I recently started listening to some early Chicago stuff.  Some seriously great guitar.  I found a Live in Japan CD with a totally awesome version of 25 or 6 to 4.

Also really been enjoying Joe Walsh.  He has a bunch of songs that could easily go on this list.  Life's Been Good for sure...especially live cut from the Eagles double live album.
That's because it was the brilliant Terry Kath on guitar.  He died way too young.  Sometime after that Chicago went full Pop and I stopped listening to them except for the mega-hits on the radio.

My favourite game - The Cardigans
Walk - Pantera

Haha these would be great back to back. I always liked "Cowboys from Hell" too.

One band I haven't seen yet is Kyuss - 50 Million Year Trip is another great road trip song.

And this may not be too popular in this group but just about anything from the first two B-52s albums works for me as a perk up in the middle hours of a long drive when the highway just stretches on forever.

EDIT: Ooh and almost all of Siamese Dream by Smashing Pumpkins.  Especially like Geek USA for driving.

Pretty much anything from Miami Sound Machine or Tower of Power.

On a slightly different track, in the past when I was able to meander through winding mountain roads in southern Germany, nothing was better than Vivaldi's Four Seasons.

those mountain roads were beautiful when I went through them in 2002.  of course I couldn't really relax or get into it with my father-in-law driving and worrying about whether he was going to stay on the road.

my wife and mother-in-law would go "hairpin, hairpin, HAIRPIN!" on every one of those turns.  I think my father-in-law considered deliberately going off the road once or twice just to get them to stop.

TP for a number of different options -- especially that Cornell acoustic version.

Thanks. I omitted Radar Love since you nailed it off the bat. A similar tune I like is Love Spreads by The Stone Roses. I'm in a Hurry by Alabama is great. Miles Davis has great stuff. Kendrick Lamar has some pretty good stuff. Rubber Soul and Revolver by Beatles are almost perfect. The Cars 1978 album is the weirdest good album but its great for the road. Everlong by Foo Fighters. Under My Thumb by the Rolling Stones.
