Another excellent game by Jrue.

Yeah, who knew White was going to fall off a cliff? We've really needed Jrue's steady hand these past couple of games. Dude decided to step up at exactly the right time.

It is convenient that Jrue showed up right when White went into a mini slump. C's can win games when either one or the other shows up, but not if neither shows up.

Didn't everyone know White was going to fall off a cliff? I mean White was always going to regress to the mean.  That is how those things work.

There’s a space between clear All-Star and 2022 playoffs disaster. We thought he had moved past the latter. Hopefully it really is just a mini-slump and not indicative of something greater. We are who we are this season in large part to White elevating his game.

But luckily Jrue suddenly became a much better player just as White fell off. That has been huge. If both of them just ‘regress to the mean’, then we will be fine, as well

well when you play well above your level, you are invariably going to play well below it at some point, so that you end up where you should be

No, that isn't how probabilities or regression to the mean work. There isn't some cosmic force that will make you play the perfect level of bad to instantly balance out the good, it's far, far more likely to have a bunch slightly below average games than a couple of real stinkers.

But even that isn't guaranteed, players have (and will continue to) go on unreasonably long hot streaks without suddenly having equally long/extreme cold streaks. And ditto for cold streaks like Al's not meaning that he's going to start shooting 57% on threes in the next 2 rounds.
I'm bitter.

in normal math settings, yes, but not in sports.  Sports are far more likely to have extremes, which is why White can play out of his mind for 5 games, but also why he will stink up the joint for several games. Normal probability rules just don't apply to sports.

Love how Jrue has been abusing the Cavs guards in the paint. It really helped set the tone the last couple games.

I hear you, but it's still unusual for a player to average nearly 30 ppg on 71% shooting over 3 games and then 9 ppg on 26% shooting in the next 3. These games are all of similar importance with similar line-ups and he's a very important player on our team. Players will have good games and bad games, but they are usually spread out throughout a large spread of games where that player also has many 'average' games.

This enormous swing from one set of 3 amazing games (he also played well in games 1 and 2 vs the Heat) immediately to this next set of 3 horrible games is really strange. Dude needs to balance out. This isn't Pritchard we're talking about here, White was nearly an All-Star this season.

It's not really strange. Judt one defensive adjustment could cause that. It's a false assumption that a player shooting 71% on certain kinds of shots can just switch to other shots and go back to 71%. White can't "balance it out" without the help of the defensive scheme that enabled him to shoot like that.

I think part of White's "Slump" is that he drew attention to how good he can be if not guarded well. We have at least 4 guys ( I'm not counting Al at this point...) you can't guard them all tightly and you can't double-team. The Heat didn't concentrate their Defense on White. But The Cavs noticed and are giving him added attention. The Cavs are knocking White all over the place but they can't do that with Jrue he's too strong...
