Brown’s new deal has $103MM in guaranteed money, with $4MM in likely incentives and another $8MM in unlikely incentives, a source tells Jay King of The Athletic

Lot of money but really glad they got this done.   Obviously, those in the organization are seeing the stepup with Jaylen coming.

One less possible distraction to hang over things.

At this very moment it's an overpay. Basically paying for the potential to be great. So who's gone next season, Brown or Hayward?

The incentive breakdown appears to be:

$1 million each year for playing 65 games and the team winning at least 49 games or getting to the second round.

$2 million each year for one of MVP, DPOY, or All-NBA.

Here’s hoping he earns all the incentives!

Jaylen Brown putting up a '94 Hakeem year (in terms of awards) would be a-ok with me! Bit of a bargain then ;D

So $26.75M/yr is what is comes down to for cap purposes (I read that somewhere). I guess that's close enough to the 4 yr / $100M ($25M/yr) I was hoping for, so I can step off of the ledge. I honestly was not psyched with the initial report.

I know people are talking like we are doing Jaylen a solid here, but we have to realize that in his mind he is giving us a discount. If he goes out and performs at an All-Star level for the duration of his contract, he will probably not look too favorably on us nickel and diming him. On the plus side, not having to match a $125M contract next offseason at least gets us the full 4 years (rather than the 3+1) at $18M less.

I am happy to keep Jaylen around - he has been my favorite Celtic for a couple of years now and this should hopefully make everybody happy moving forward.

I suppose we should begin the Tatum (plus salary) for Towns trade threads now as Jaylen can't go anywhere until 7/1.

That's a lot of money for a guy who has yet to play at a high enough level to justify that money.

Still, Ainge is pretty good about these things, he doesn't give out contracts that end up being bad 3-4 years down the line.

Jaylen will be a tradeable asset.
I have a long memory of this stuff. The Dee Brown, Dino Radja and Mark Blount extensions all looked great the day they were signed.  Hopefully this one turns out better, though Jaylen right now is better than all of those guys.

My concern is they're paying him to be an all star.

The Avery deal worked out nicely...

When do the incentives kick in?  I mean does this year count to trigger the first year of the extension or does he just get the bonus at the end of that season if he hits an incentive in that season?
2023 Historical Draft - Brooklyn Nets - 9th pick

Bigs - Pau, Amar'e, Issel, McGinnis, Roundfield
Wings - Dantley, Bowen, J. Jackson
Guards - Cheeks, Petrovic, Buse, Rip

Incentives are only earnable during the new contract, and each year is treated separately.

Ainge did not pay a premium. He got Jaylen on a contract that is less than Jaylen is worth (the max). He saved the team $15mil over 4 years with this contract.

Great business for the Celtics. Not so much for Jaylen. He left a lot of money on the table.

Paying $115M over 4 years to a guy with career highs of 14.5 points, 4.9 rebounds and 1.6 assists - you don't consider that to be paying a premium?

That's an interesting perspective.

I mean, I understand the concept of "potential" and the argument that if Ainge didn't pay him somebody else would.  But does the fact that SOMEBODY out there is willing to pay him that necessarily mean he is worth that?

I don't know.

I'm a little worried about this one.  It's a big commitment from the team, who already has max money tied up in Gordon Hayward and Kemba Walker and still needs to allow for an extension to Jayson Tatum (which will almost certainly be a max).  Even if Hayward opts out next year that's still three max or near max contacts allocated to Kemba, Brown and Tatum - will the team have enough cap space left over to build a contender around that core?

Is Brown going to develop into the borderline All-Star that he'd have to become in order to justify that type of money?

I guess we will find out.

It won’t be 115, it will be more like 107.

I told you guys that Jaylen is worth around 24-27 million, he'll get around 26.75 million per year if he doesn't hit the unlikely bonuses.
