Actually a really smart play on a Giannis injury. Rather callous thought. It came on the heels of ,"could we have gotten any lower a first round  pick"-Then the thought of injuries, as the only thing that could derail the Bucks.
I held it back but it keeps coming to the forefront with all the injured free agents and Gordon.
Have players reached and are pushing boundaries of athleticism ,and strength.

add that it reduced the celtics salary hold this year, meaning they have just enough cap space for a max free agent.

the difference between #24 and #30 should not be that dramatic. and who knows? the bucks might stumble for a variety of reasons.

good move by ainge.

Democracy begins with freedom from hunger, freedom from unemployment, freedom from fear, and freedom from hatred.

I'm not sure I'd use the term "really smart", but I agree with the concept. Just because the Bucks were great last year, doesn't mean that pick must necessarily be worse than 24th (which was the position of this year's pick used to get it).

Things to keep in mind:

1) As the OP mentioned, injuries (and other bad stuff) happen. Keep in mind the Celtics were favorites to win the East this past year, and ended up with the 22nd pick even though they were healthy. The Bucks could lose some combination of Middleton, Brogdon, and Lopez this offseason. Or, something could happen that we're not thinking of right now.

2) There's more room to improve from #24 than there is to worsen. The best this pick can be, if Milwaukee runs into major trouble, is #8. The worst it can be would be #32.

3) This was about cap space and preserving assets. Phoenix recognized the Celtics' situation -- wanting to maintain a good chunk of cap space and future assets, keeping its options open -- and took advantage. Both sides saw value.

4) It's possible the Celtics value next year's draft more than they did this year's. They might not have seen anyone they really valued in that range this year especially after taking Grant Williams and still having the 33rd pick coming up. Perhaps they figured even a pick in the late 20s or early 30s next year would be equal value.

With all this said, I'm still a little curious as to why they moved away from Baynes this early. Why not hold on and try to deal him later, when you actually came to an agreement with a free agent? But that's a different topic.

the bucks can well lose a couple of starters this offseason.

That alone will cripple them, I mean Brogdon, Lopez and Middleton could all be gone to other teams.

The clippers pick that came out of “nowhere” - ( 2 second rounders we didn’t want to draft)  keeps yielding for us.
Overal:
- delayed the pic so we can use it in trades until next summer.
- Reduced our payroll this year by ~$7M (Baynes + pick 20 salary - min roster spot hold)
- Got us Edwards for free... here is the hope he turns into our VanVleet

We all have to give major props to danny and his team for that... the only problem is those picks he accumulates often go to waste lol

Particularly the international class, so if the C’s wind up with three 1sts again, there will be more viable draft and stash candidates than this season.

Giannis is due for an injury

At worst the pick can be used to move up next year.

Win/win

Don’t forget that tatums salary as a third pick is lower by a few million a year because he’s not the number one pick as Danny was saying he would have picked him there if not for the philly trade... I wonder if Tatum holds a grudge because of that lol

Even with picking up a number one pick it seems ridiculous getting rid of Baynes considering there aren't any starting caliber centers left on the team. I somewhat suspect that is his injury status is worse than we've been lead to believe....at least that's what mind wants to believe.

The decision was fine even if it lands 25-30. We didn’t want three guaranteed rookie deals this year with the cap holds, and it was a weak class. Plus there is always a chance that something happens with Milwaukee and it becomes a pick better than 24. It’s better than moving it for protected second round picks, which happens a lot when dumping salary.

Plus, it opens up a hilarious scenario wherein we sign Brogdon and make the Bucks worse, which would be *chef’s kiss*

When's the CBA up?  1 or 2 years?   Maybe the NBA's gonna start testing for roids.
