Boston Celtics president of basketball operations Brad Stevens says the acquisition of guard Derrick White from the San Antonio Spurs was a case of being presented with an opportunity that was too good to pass up.

"We've thought for years that Derrick was a really good fit with our best players," Stevens said during a video conference call Friday morning. "He is an excellent defender. He just makes the right play on offense over and over and over. He's a guy that only cares about winning, that will do all of the little things, as you can see in some of his stats, defensively, with regard to willingness to put his body on the line, activity, shot challenges, all of those things. And on offense, just by making simple plays and doesn't need to do anything to be on the highlights to really, really impact winning.

"We felt really fortunate to be able to get a guy like that on a long contract that we think is, again, you know, a perfect fit for our best players."

White, who is signed through 2025, has familiarity with Jayson Tatum, Jaylen Brown and Marcus Smart, having played with them on Team USA in the 2019 World Cup. He also spent time with Ime Udoka when the Celtics' coach was an assistant with the Spurs earlier in White's career.

That said, the cost to get White -- both for his play and his contract, which averages a little over $17 million per season -- wasn't cheap. Boston gave up its first-round pick in 2022 (top-four protected) and made a pick swap with the Spurs in 2028, something Stevens admitted weighed on him in making the move.

Ultimately, though, he decided that White's fit was worth the price.

"I think the analysis of that is we have some really good players and we have a person that we think fits in perfectly with them as another really good player that can only make them better," Stevens said.

White better be worth it. Feel like other decent players were had for a lot less.

I think White is exponentially better than all those guys. But the cost of acquiring him wasn’t cheap.

I’m hoping he’s as impactful as I think he can be. He also allows us to trade Smart (or him) in the off-season for a shooter or starting 4.

There are two players on that list that you could contend are equal or better than White, and White has a similar or better contract than both -- Powell and Levert.

Of those players, the Cavs clearly paid more for a guy with less guaranteed years (less team-friendly).

I do like Powell though and think the Clippers got a steal there.

It costs to get guys that can be in your playoff rotation.

White is vastly superior to those players.  The only guy at his level who was traded was McCollum, who went for a little less but has a far inferior contract.

Not only that, but NOP had to waive his physical to complete the trade.

Whoa, they did?? A guy owed $100 million in hits early 30s and they didn’t care about a physical?

That's the report I saw this morning. Seems like that is really flying under the radar.

Come on...McCollum is a much better player. I would have preferred Norman Powell over White. Lavert and Divencenzo are on par with Derrick. Reddish may turn out to be a better player than White, shooting 36%+ from 3pt, is 6’8” and was a top 10 pick. Only 22 years old.

LeVert is reasonably comparable to White but if what we are hearing is true, White is a better defender, better all around player.  Still, they paid less for LeVert in that trade (not sure a lot less is accurate).  CLE did have a nice expiring contract though.  Overall, I am happier with White than I would have been with LeVert.

I wouldn't want Powell, very undersized.  And McCollum (also mentioned by someone) is a really very different deal, both in terms of accomplishments in the league and contract.

You are just unequivocally wrong here.

McCullom is a better scorer/shooter than White, but did you know that McCullom is only at 20.7points per 36 minutes this year and White is at 18.7 points per 36 minutes?

Did you know that White is averaging 5.6 assists per game compared to McCullom's 4.6? Meanwhile, White has less turnovers per game.

And that doesn't even begin to compare their defense, where CJ McCullom is not even in the same stratosphere as Derrick White, because CJ is one of the if not the worst defensive guards in the NBA.

And that doesn't begin to talk about McCullom's contract where he is owed 69 million dollars over the next two seasons after this one, which is 17 million more than White is owed over the next three seasons.

And, as I mentioned before, the Pelicans had to WAIVE CJ's physical to complete the trade! Doesn't that send up some red flags?

I advocated that CJ would be a great option for the Cs, but I think White on his contract is a better option for the Cs than McCullom on his contract.
