Are we going to use our 17 million trade exception and on who? Any ideas who we could get with this trade exception and some picks?

Terrence Ross
Kyle Anderson
Thad Young
Lauri Markkanen
Malik Beasley
Christain Wood
Josh Hart
Steven Adams

I hope we use it to help this year but you are probably right.

I'd hope not. Wait to see what happens with Beal. If you get Beal you may need to accept Bertans via exemption.

Horford, Smart, Langford, a 1st and exemption
for
Beal and Bertans.

Starters
Schro, Beal, Brown, Tatum, TL

Main bench
PP,JR, Nesmith, Bertans, Kanter

We'll be patient with it, but I'd love Slo-Mo or Thad Young

We’ll probably wait and see

If Horford’s contract gets restructured into a long term deal at less money (let’s say he opts out and we sign him to a longer deal at a friendlier rate), will this be beneficial to the team? Like can we keep him and use the exception (somehow) to trade for a star like Beal?

I think the C's are far more likely to sell off salary to get below the tax then take on even more salary this year.  I wouldn't be surprised to see them use it over the summer though.
2023 Historical Draft - Brooklyn Nets - 9th pick

Bigs - Pau, Amar'e, Issel, McGinnis, Roundfield
Wings - Dantley, Bowen, J. Jackson
Guards - Cheeks, Petrovic, Buse, Rip

I don't think you can combine players with the exception.

Slo-Mo or Thad would be good addons.

Think he’s suggesting that if the Wizards go for the deal, we must first agree to take on Bertrand for the TPE, and then the rest is executed in a second trade (since they are at the same time, it’s basically like one big trade even if it’s technically two trades)

I'd think it is being kept for flexibility as well.  I think there could be chance we use it at the trade deadline, depending on how we are doing.

I think they keep this in the back pocket as long as they can in case the big trade comes along.

That way if they trade away a bunch of their depth, they can use it to add one or two replacements.

There are some salary cap realities in the way of them using it.

They could use it this year, but this would push them into the luxury tax where recent history suggests they're intent on avoiding "starting the clock" on the repeater tax. For this reason, I wouldn't expect them to use it unless the team is way overachieving by the trade deadline and the front-office believes they're one role player away from contending this year.

Next summer is also complicated, because Smart and R Williams's salaries step up. If I'm not mistaken, the only way to stay under the tax next year would be to cut Horford. I suppose if they make a big trade for a 3rd star next summer and are already in the tax, then they really go for it and try to add another player with that TPE. But that's the only context I could foresee for this.

It will be difficult to trade for Beal next summer because we'd be making a sign-and-trade, which subjects us to the hard cap -- or, more accurately, doing anything with the TPE next summer AND trading for Beal is going to be near impossible.
