Title: Josh Smith trade rumors
Post by: crownontherocks on February 08, 2013, 04:38:29 PM
The Hawks met with Smith's representatives this week, at which point the team indicated it was not willing to give Smith a max contract after this season, according to a source.
Smith, who will be an unrestricted free agent this summer, told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution late last month that he believes he's a max player, which would mean he'd be in line for a five-year deal worth around $94 million from Atlanta.
But the Hawks, which expect to be major players next summer in free agency or through trades, do not want to tie up that kind of money going forward.
Smith, according to a source, is prepared to move on. He has been one of the most enigmatic players in the Hawks' history, capable of incredible feats at both ends of the floor—as evidenced by his 23-point, 16-rebound performance against the Bulls in the 2011 playoffs—but also capable of driving coaches and fans crazy with his decision-making. Last month he was suspended by the team for a game for "conduct detrimental to the team," after a run-in at practice with Coach Larry Drew.
Yet the Hawks have not formally decided to trade the 27-year-old Smith, who leads Atlanta in scoring and blocked shots, and is second in rebounds and assists. Team president of basketball operations and general manager Danny Ferry is in fact-finding mode now, seeing what the market is for Smith.
The website Hoopsworld reported earlier this week that the Suns had had exploratory talks with Atlanta about Smith.
If the Hawks hold onto Smith for the rest of this season, they could still trade him this summer in a sign-and-trade deal. However, the market for such trades will begin to narrow; teams $4 million or more above the luxury tax threshold, or that would become $4 million or more above the threshold by making a trade, will be prohibited from doing sign and trade deals.
The Hawks traded for signed for eight players on the last year of their contracts this summer. Five of those players came from the Nets in the deal that sent Joe Johnson to Brooklyn last July. They can clear more than $30 million in cap room by just letting those deals expire; only Al Horford and guards Lou Williams and John Jenkins are under contract for next season.
If the Hawks let Smith walk without taking any salary back, they'd be able to clear more than $40 million off their cap.
The Hawks could be a player for free agents like Dwight Howard, who is from Atlanta, or guard Chris Paul, who famously was skipped over by the Hawks in the 2005 Draft in favor of forward Marvin Williams, taken with the second pick overall that year. But if they find they can't attract a premier free agent, they might still be able to deal Smith in a sign-and-trade for an impact player under contract similar to that which they might find in free agency.

Key info there. I wonder how dramatically the market for Smith would change if the Hawks decide not to trade him until the offseason?

Well, he's not a max player, in my opinion. Plus, he has sort of a Dwight Howard mentality—doesn't seem to be serious about basketball, and doesn't really improve on his weak areas. Both players are scary good when utilizing their strengths and maintaining their focus, but they don't do those two things often enough.

Unfortunately, Rondo, I think, has a bit of this as well (think "free throws" and the "I play well when I want to" aura he exudes).

best for atl to trade this unrealitic son of a gun and trade him by the trade deadline.

If you wait until the summer and nobody else wants to give him a max deal, they have the cap space and Smith burns his bridge with the hawks, the hawks will get zero back for Smith. It will be a step backward for the team

PHX has the most interst. If i were ATL i would ask them a deal surrounding Gortat, Beasley and 1st round pick (lotto bound)

I don't know: isn't trading Smith for Beasley just exchanging one massive headache for a lesser one (that lasts for two more years)?

Maybe ask for the expiring contract of Wes Johnson in the deal, plus a couple of 1st round picks (Phoenix has rights to the Lakers and Wolves protected 2013 picks)?

Nets going hard after Josh Smith, sources say. While they've discussed a trade for Ben Gordon, getting Josh is a bigger priority.

Will anyone give him one? Dallas or other team with space?

Deron Williams for J-Smoove?

That'd be funny.

Brooklyn continuing their trend of trying to overpay very good but not great players.

Good decision by the hawks not overpaying an overrated player.

Two things:

1-Smith is not a max contract player.  Nobody should give him one, although someone probably will.

2-Atlanta will only trade Smith for expirings and picks.  They want the cap space.  My guess s Smith will not be traded.

Yea, I guess giving up Wallace could make sense. We are out of the running in any case.

They might be able to bring in a 3rd team, like say San An and do something like this:

SA - Wallace
BK - Smith
AT - Jackson, Brooks, Blatche, two 1sts from BK

Not a bad trade for any of the teams, but Atlanta could probably do better for Smith if they just opened it up.

Given how bad Gerald Wallace has looked I don't see how they can include him in a trade to Atlanta. I just don't see the incentive on their end. That's a lot of salary for what would be two lower first round picks.

I don't see what team would be eager to take that on in a three team deal either.

The type of team that should consider renting out cap space to take on Wallace's contract for two late first round picks is a rebuilding team that is unlikely to be a playoff team for a few years.

The Spurs "are among the teams with interest" in Josh Smith, a source told Yahoo! Sports.
Hawks GM Danny Ferry was previously working with the Spurs, but it sounds like the Spurs are just eyeing the situation rather than actively pursuing Smith. It would be unlike San Antonio to pursue a blockbuster midseason, especially with the team rolling, and the Spurs are unlikely to have interest in paying Smith in free agency after the season.

I don't think San Antonio pulls the trigger unless Josh Smith tells them he'd be willing to sign a contract extension for less than the max.

If it is just Jackson's contract and some young non-rotation players and a draft pick or two, I don't see why San An wouldn't make that trade even without any assurances from Smith.

Right but why would ATL trade Smith for Jackson and Splitter, who they'd need to pay this summer? Not much value.

What is wrong with paying talented players?

They seem to want a young center to go alongside Al Horford. Tiago Splitter is as good as they are going to get for Josh Smith given the situation (expiring deal, high contract demands).

Splitter isn't likely to receive a huge bid this summer. Keeping him shouldn't be a problem.

Yeah but SAS isn't going to give Splitter up for an expiring deal like Smith especially when they would also have to give up Jackson (to make the dollars work).  Doesn't make sense from SAS standpoint to include Splitter.  Now maybe if they also got Pachulia or Korver so they could at least replace one of the positions they might be more interested.

Huh?  Splitter is more than likely walking this summer anyways.  Splitter is as much a rental as Smith is.

I expect San Antonio to keep hold of Splitter this summer. I don't think anyone makes a large enough offer for San Antonio to give up on him.

They will be looking to Splitter for an increased role in future years as Duncan continues to age and eventually leaves. Plus, he is their 2nd best big man currently. They need to keep Splitter to compete.

They can afford to pay him. Parker is on an affordable deal. So is Duncan. I think Ginobili's contract expires as soon. He'll either leave or stay on a more cost effective deal. San Antonio can afford to keep Splitter.

I would be very surprised to see Splitter leave San Antonio this summer.
