Title: The Phoenix Suns have fired GM Ryan McDonough

I don't want to lose Rozier but IF they hire Kevin McHale as Woj suggested is a possibility does that increase the likelihood?

Too bad for Ryan, but honestly makes complete sense and I've been expecting it for a while.

Huh. Weird timing.

Really weird timing.

Bizarre timing for sure..they must have a verbal from someone who can really change their direction or be a better lure for free agents for next year's class...

Ayton looks like a good player -- Lamarcus Aldridge-type frontcourt piece.

But I think the other off-season moves were the cause for concern.

Ariza?
Anderson?
Bridges for Smith and a future pick?

They had a ton of cap flexibility, expiring contracts, and picks, and they left this off-season only marginably better, while wasting assets to do it.

Edit: Also, the Suns have always tried to be players on big name trades. What if McDonough was unwilling to get in the Butler sweepstakes, and the owner fired him because of it?

It would explain the weird timing.

james jones? he just retired 2 years ago. pretty quick rise to GM for him. surprising esp for someone who was a role player at best.

Funny thing is, I was perusing the nba reddit forum, and a lot of Suns fans said they actually liked their off-season.

I did not.

I'm really glad to cheer for a team with Danny Ainge as our GM.

Unless there was a specific incident that caused it, this is about the worst way the Suns could have handled the situation. How are you going to give a GM the entire offseason to hire a HC, use the first overall pick and make the kind of deals he did, then fire the guy before seeing where it gets the team?

I was thinking the same.

He used to work for the Celtics, didn't he? I'd take him back on the front office team if he wanted back. I think he did as good as job as could be expected in Phoenix.

Yeah, as others have said, odd timing. But their off-season has been odd all around

His track record definitely wasn’t stellar:

That would be a great spot for Kevin McHale. He could send us Ayton in a few years.

I'd guess David Griffin.  17 years with the Suns before his 7 year stint in Cleveland.

That’s what you get for not letting us work out Josh Jackson which turned out great for us in the end. Lol

Good call.

I wonder if this is followed by an overpay for PBev. I’m hopeful it’s followed by an overpay for Rozier, even as a T-Ro Stan.

I disagree. Salty would never fit in a tire fire situation.

Nope. His disappearance mysteriously coincided with McD's unraveling.

salty strikes me as the kind of guy that makes lemonade out of burnt tires.

The Athletic Sources: The Phoenix Suns also fired assistant GM Pat Connelly and director of scouting Courtney Witte, along with GM Ryan McDonough. Draft picks under McDonough's regime included Alex Len, T.J. Warren, Devin Booker, Dragan Bender, Josh Jackson and Deandre Ayton.

Now they fire him.
After the offseason.
Great timing.

Until the last 5-6 years, Phoenix was a solid franchise.

Hard to argue with picking Booker and Ayton.  At the time, Bender was possibly the next big thing.  Not a fan of Josh Jackson, but he was touted too.

Seems like a house-cleaning, in spite of the timing.

When do people believe the "right" time to fire a GM is? For me, as soon as you realize the person running the team is someone you don't have confidence in you fire them as soon as possible.

Is there an ideal time to fire a GM where they won't have an opportunity to mess up the summer, the trade deadline, etc.?

Just curious if there is a definitive opinion here.

I hope you see the point about the timing, right?  A GM's most important work is done leading up to the regular season.  The Ayton pick was good but apparently the trades he made displeased the owners.  What other explanation is there for the timing.

Honestly, looking back, those were all the 'correct' picks at the time of each draft. Even the Chriss trade looked good at the time (SAC acquired two firsts and the rights to Bogdanovic). Obviously not every player has panned out like he should have, but McDonough didn't blow it with any of those picks.

I imagine the trades and FA signings had a lot more to do with his firings than his draft record.
